Saskatchewan Health Authority – Saskatoon and University Saskatchewan, Department of Surgery, Division of Thoracic Surgery is seeking a Thoracic Surgeon for a one year locum term. Collective responsibilities include clinical care of inpatients and outpatients as well as education of undergraduate and postgraduate trainees. The successful candidate will have appointments in both Saskatchewan Health Authority and the University of Saskatchewan, where teaching of surgical residents and medical students is integral. Participation in the thoracic surgery call roster is required.The candidate will have demonstrated expertise in Thoracic Surgery. The candidate will have an active interest in research, demonstrated by completion of a post-graduate degree and interest in further developing the research activities of the division and the department. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated interdisciplinary competence as demonstrated by active participation in multidisciplinary rounds.It is active in undergraduate and residency education. We are part of a clinical teaching unit with the division of general surgery and have the participation of junior and senior general surgery residents. As well we have respiratory medicine residents rotate on our service. The unit is based at St. Paul’s hospital and does supply coverage for inpatient consults at the 2 other hospitals. We started our Robotics program in February 2023 and recently added a second robot at our site. We have full access to a robot for all minimally invasive procedures. We expect to perform >300 Robotic cases this coming year. This includes benign and malignant foregut and pulmonary procedures. We have dedicated access to endoscopy including EBUS and EUS. There is a dedicated group of thoracic anesthesiologists with excellent perioperative care. Outpatient care is delivered in the ambulatory care unit at SPH. We are the provincial referral center for esophageal cancer care and do approximately 40 esophagectomies/year. We are actively involved with both of the provincial cancer centres and participate in multidisciplinary tumor board meetings on a weekly basis. We have full access to telehealth. The synchrotron allows us excellent access for PET imaging.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will hold certification or be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Surgery of Canada (RCPSC) and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan (CPSS).
