Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Physician to join our team at the Western Communities Substance Use Program. As a Physician, you will play a vital role in providing outpatient Addiction Medicine Services to individuals struggling with substance use disorders in the Western Communities area.

Community Information:
The Westshore encompasses the communities of Langford, Colwood, Metchosin, the Highlands, Esquimalt/View Royal and the Juan the Fuca Coast, in addition to the First Nations of Esquimalt, Songhees, and Scia’new. Population is approximately 94,000 with an average age of 39.7 years.

A waterfront community, the Westshore features a rich heritage and a unique connection to nature. A short drive into the downtown Victoria core, and an overall lower cost of living, the Westshore is a great choice to live and work.

Cycle or walk the famous Galloping Goose Regional Trail, which winds through 55 picturesque kilometres of the Westshore, or discover the surrounding lakes (Langford Lake, Glen Lake and Florence Lake) and hike Mount Finlayson, Mount Wells and Goldstream Provincial Park.

Langford is Canada’s fastest growing municipality, showcasing a 20.9% increase in population in five years. Population is approximately 25,000.

It is in proximity to Victoria General Hospital, which serves Vancouver Island with its specialty services.

Responsibilities:

Direct Patient Care:
● Maintain opioid agonist therapy (OAT) for stable clients.
● Conduct new patient consultations and initiate OAT for clients with opioid use disorder.
● Perform comprehensive assessments, diagnosis, and treatment planning for patients, with a focus on managing withdrawal symptoms.
● Assess, diagnose, and manage patients with complex overlapping pain and addiction disorders.
● Initiate OAT when required for opioid use disorders.
● Initiate anti-craving medication for clients with alcohol use disorder.
● Perform relevant diagnostic testing for the treatment of substance use disorders.
● Document patient care during patient visits.
● Facilitate robust discharge planning to connect patients with their Most Responsible Provider (MRP).

Indirect Patient Care:
● Document patient care when the patient is not present.
● Review diagnostic tests.
● Develop treatment plans.
● Participate in patient-specific conferences and team meetings when appropriate
● Correspond and communicate with other patient care providers.

Clinical Administrative Services:
● Engage in clinically related administrative activities, including medical audits, peer and interdisciplinary reviews, chart reviews, and incident report reviews.
● Provide consultation with other programs or agencies specific to the services.
● Contribute to program planning and development activities when appropriate.
● Participate in evaluating the efficiency, quality, and delivery of services.

Qualifications:
● Medical degree from an accredited institution.
● Valid medical license in the province of British Columbia.
● Board certification in Addiction Medicine (preferred).
● Experience in providing addiction medicine services and treating substance use disorders.
● Strong clinical skills in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning for substance use disorders.
● Excellent communication and collaboration abilities to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
