Job Description
McMaster University together with Hamilton Health Sciences are seeking an academic Hepatobiliary Surgeon to be based at the Juravinski Hospital. The group is the sole provider of advanced Hepatobiliary (HPB) surgery in our region, and supports a referral population of 2.5 million people. The center provides all aspects of comprehensive HPB care except transplant, and the group is very active in therapeutic biliary endoscopy. All required support services are in place with excellent collaborative relationships with other departments, especially Diagnostic Imaging, Hepatology, Gastroenterology and Oncology. The unit is recognized by Cancer Care Ontario as meeting standards for HPB surgery and is an active participant in the CCO HPB Community of Practice.

Role responsibilities for the successful candidate will include provision of comprehensive advanced HPB clinical care in collaboration with the existing group, and a significant commitment to research and education. The successful candidate will participate in the Acute Care Surgery call schedule, the Citywide ERCP Call schedule, and the HPB Backup Call schedule. The candidate will be encouraged to provide ERCP services. If the candidate is not already qualified to perform ERCP the group will provide training to the candidate over the first year.
Within the HPB group this position has 1.0 FTE clinical resource.
The successful candidate will be allocated the same clinical resources as the current HPB surgeons. Clinical resources include
• OR time
• endoscopy time
• ERCP time (beginning in year 2 if candidate is not already qualified in ERCP)
• Outpatient clinic time
• Weeks of ACS (including on call and MRP for ACS service)
The General Surgeon Division together with the Department of Surgery, McMaster University is a fully accredited Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada training program in General Surgery with full involvement in undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing medical education programs.
This is a full-time appointment in the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University and academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. A commitment and demonstrated interest in surgical education at all levels is essential, as well as active participation in research programs and academic initiatives of the General Surgery Service and Division, specifically in clinical trials and evidence-based surgery.
The successful applicant must hold (or be eligible for) Certification in General Surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as well as licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Formal post residency training in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, or Surgical Oncology with specific focus on HPB is required.
