QUALIFICATIONS
This leadership position is open to current active members of the Section of Dentistry and Oral Health, Department of Surgery, Calgary Zone AHS. In addition, they must be either a pediatric dentist, or a dental specialist, who works at the Dental Clinic in the Alberta Children’s Hospital. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated an interest in surgical leadership and will have a respected profile in the dental community. They will have effective communication skills and a track record of engaging their team members.

Deliverables

The Pediatric Dental Lead will provide leadership for all dentists and dental specialists working in the clinic and represent Pediatric Dentistry at ACH.

Clinical Responsibilities

·         Establish inclusion and exclusion criteria for pediatric dental patients to be seen in the clinic, following best‑practice guidelines.

·         Provide direct patient care in the ACH Dental Clinic on a routine basis.

·         Treat special‑needs children both in clinic and in the ACH OR.

·         Ensure quality of work of all staff dentists and specialists, with a goal of delivering high‑quality, efficient, evidence‑based care to all patients.

Management Responsibilities

·         Collaborate with the Division Chief, Pediatric Dentistry, and the Section Chief, Dentistry and Oral Health.

·         Pediatric dentists’ meetings: Collaborate with the Division Chief to prepare the agenda and minutes (Quarterly).

·         Receive allocation of Main OR time from the Division Chief, Pediatric Dentistry, and assign OR time to clinic pediatric dentists.

·         Oversee scheduling of ACH dental clinics for pediatric dentists, orthodontists, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

·         Develop, review, and update clinical protocols and procedures for the ACH Dental Clinic.

·         Oversee organization of dental supplies, equipment, and related needs in collaboration with professional and support staff.

·         Collaborate with ACH administration in management of the dental clinic, including unit manager, patient care manager, ambulatory care executive director, and OR manager.

·         Provide input on dental support staff performance.

·         Collaborate with the Dental Clinic Coordinator on staffing utilization, scheduling templates, and booking.

·         Participate in recruitment and selection of dental support staff.

·         Work with the Clinic Manager to ensure quality, patient‑focused clinical activities.

·         Attend quarterly meetings with clinic leadership to review dental clinic operations and direction.

·         Determine, evaluate, and interpret key performance metrics in collaboration with the operations team and Division/Section leadership.

·         Collaborate with the cleft palate clinic director and team as needed.

·         Prepare Pre‑Survey documentation for ACH Dental Clinic accreditation.

Education Responsibilities

·         Prepare and deliver presentations on dental and oral health to various audiences, including dental and other health professionals and educators within Alberta Health Services.

·         Supervise GPR residents during ACH rotations.

·         Collaborate with the GPR Director to support the provision of educational materials (e.g., lectures, workshops) for GPR residents.

0.05 FTE – Medical Affairs Honorarium
