Appointment Type and Rank:  The successful candidate will hold a limited term academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, or a continuing academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor depending on qualifications and experience.

Position Profile:

The Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, at Western University and London Health Sciences Centre, and St. Joseph’s Health Care London are seeking a full-time clinical academic Cardiologist at the Assistant, Associate or Professor level, depending on qualifications and experience, with a clinical and academic focus in Advanced Heart Failure. The successful candidate is expected to have completed training in an Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology program as well as a strong academic interest in teaching, research and/or quality improvement. Strong preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate the ability to lead an independent career in heart failure / transplant research within the Division. Preference will also be given to candidates with Level 3 training in Echocardiography. Preference will be given to Clinician Researchers, however Clinician Teachers will also be considered.

Academic and Clinical Expectations: 

The Advanced Heart Failure Program in London currently includes 4 Cardiologists, 1 General Internist and 1 Nephrologist. The Program offers inpatient advanced heart failure consultative services, outpatient Heart Failure clinics with a large, fully serviced clinic at the SJHC, as well as Cardiac Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support Programs. There are also programs in Pulmonary Hypertension, Cardiac Amyloidosis, and a robust Regional Heart Failure Network. The Advanced Heart Failure Program has a strong working relationship with Cardiac Imaging, Cardiac Sarcoidosis Clinic, Cardiac Rehabilitation and is a member of the Multi-Organ Transplant Program. The Program is looking to further expand these relationships as well as develop stronger relationships with Cardiac Electrophysiology, Palliative Care and Cardiac Rehabilitation.

Qualifications/Experience:

Applicants should be certified, or eligible for certification, in Cardiology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent. Candidates must have an MD, or equivalent, and must be eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) in the province of Ontario. 

Skills Required:

The successful candidate will join a busy academic Cardiology practice focused predominantly on the field of advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support and cardiac transplantation. The successful candidate will also have a commitment to and demonstrated aptitude for teaching, and will be expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to supervise graduate trainees.

The Division:

The Division of Cardiology strives for excellence and innovation in our clinical, research and educational cardiovascular health and disease programs. It is well-recognized and respected both nationally and internationally for delivery of outstanding Cardiac Care, excellence in Postgraduate and Undergraduate Education and for research in cardiac electrophysiology, cardiac imaging, valvular disease, cardiac transplantation (performing cardiac transplantations since 1981) and pulmonary hypertension, as well as its strength in heart failure and structural interventions. Our 33-plus cardiologists hold full-time academic appointments with the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. The Division has a fully accredited Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) Adult Cardiology Subspecialty Training Program, as well as RCPSC diploma fellowship programs. The LHSC Cardiac Care Program is the largest and the most established cardiac centre in the region with state-of-the-art Catherization and Electrophysiology labs, along with core facilities including approximately 60 inpatient ward beds, 14 Cardiac Care Unit beds and 8 Day Unit beds. LHSC provides tertiary and quaternary cardiovascular care to over one million residents within the City of London and Southwestern Ontario region.

Compensation details:

Compensation for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be primarily composed of the following sources: Fee for service (OHIP billings), Alternative Funding Plan and academic salary.

Department: The Department of Medicine is the largest department within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario. The Department has 270 full-time members representing fifteen academic Divisions and is responsible for more than 30 million dollars in annual research expenditures. The Department engages in undergraduate and postgraduate medical training of approximately 200 trainees in London, Windsor and throughout Southwestern Ontario. Department researchers are active in both clinical and basic research at the hospitals and their affiliated research institutes, including the Lawson Health Research Institute and Robarts Research Institute. The Department has strategically focused on academic excellence in research through the creation of programs such as the Program of Experimental Medicine (POEM), centres of excellence in translational and patient-oriented research, as well in medical education and innovation. Many investigators are world leaders in their respective fields of research.
