The University of Alberta is seeking a clinician and leading researcher in cardiovascular health sciences with expertise in translational sciences, clinical trials, epidemiology, or other relevant disciplines.  The selected candidate will hold the Canadian VIGOUR Centre (CVC) Chair in Cardiovascular Science and receive significant research and infrastructure support through the endowed chair to develop and lead a world-leading and independent research program in the candidate's field of expertise.

Established in 1997 as an academic research organization within the University of Alberta, the Canadian VIGOUR Centre (CVC) is devoted to the enhancement of cardiovascular health.  The CVC is internationally recognized for pioneering research in cardiovascular medicine that fosters the translation of research through thought leadership, the management of innovative clinical trials, and the development of patient registries and population outcome studies.

The University of Alberta is one of Canada's top teaching and research universities, with an international reputation for excellence across the health sciences, natural and applied sciences, creative arts, business, and social sciences. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry has been internationally recognized as among the world's top 100 medical schools, as one of Canada's premier health-education institutions, and as the largest faculty within the College of Health Sciences. The college is the academic home for over 700 faculty and over 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students from diverse disciplines and backgrounds. The Department of Medicine is a recognized leader in world-class research, innovative education, and outstanding patient care.  The largest department in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, includes 14 divisions with over 1100 academic and clinical faculty, students, residents, and fellows, supported by more than 300 health, technical, and support staff to help achieve our goal of improving health and health care locally and globally.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans. AHS is one of the top five most integrated health systems in the world and is recognized internationally as a global leader in this area. Alberta's unique single health care system brings together acute care, mental health, continuing care, home care, and emergency services under a single authority. Connect Care, the AHS provincial electronic health records system launched in 2019, provides a single access point, and data resource for complete, up to date health information on all Albertans.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

·       An MD (or equivalent) with certification in a sub-specialty of Internal Medicine with a focus in Cardiovascular Health

·       Be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA)

·       Expertise and accomplishments in education and mentorship

·       Success in applying for independent peer-reviewed research funding

·       Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships that bring a variety of stakeholders and multi-disciplinary researchers together

The position is linked to leadership of the CVC and the CVC Chair in Cardiovascular Science, which will provide operational funding for a translational research program hosted by the CVC to advance knowledge in the diagnosis, treatment, and enhancement of cardiovascular health.  The chairholder will report on performance as outlined in the terms of reference of the endowed chair.

Candidates are expected to participate in an appropriate share of Department of Medicine clinical service and teaching responsibilities. The primary academic Division within the Department of Medicine will be determined based on the chosen candidate.
