Community Information

Surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful valleys of agricultural land and rivers, the Municipal District of Northern Lights is a stunning place to live in all seasons. Manning, one of the newest towns in the north, was named after a former Premier of Alberta, Ernest Manning. The picturesque town sprung up after the Second World War on the banks of the Notikewin River, between two small hamlets, North Star to the south, and Notikewin to the north. Due to the diversified economy that supports the Town of Manning, the community has prospered as its businesses grew up within it to support the ever growing agricultural, forestry, gas and oil industries.

Manning and area offers a balanced lifestyle with urban amenities and a genuine small town atmosphere. Options for community involvement and an active lifestyle are endless. Volunteering for community groups or soaking up the culture - there is never a lack of great things to do!

Try out clubs, choirs, golfing, curling, hockey, snowmobiling, fishing, camping hunting, baseball - all your favorite pastimes and some new activities. Numerous parks and playgrounds, tennis courts, walking trails, ski hills, an outdoor swimming pool and skating rink provide family time, picnic time or playtime.

A hunter or fisherman may find paradise in natural bush lands surrounds Manning. "The Land of the Mighty Moose", is not just a symbol. Hunters from near and far take advantage of the abundance of North America's wildlife, including deer, elk, moose, ducks and geese.

Population of Manning in 2023 was 1,151 including catchment is 3,271 and is situated 250km northeast of Grande Prairie and 200kms south of High Level.

Manning is pleased to offer choice in great quality education programs for children. Using smart boards and video conferencing is an everyday part of our students lives. There are excellent sports programs and character-building programs both in and out of class with extracurricular activities. We have a number of excellent programs to support families.
