Job Description

Alberta Health Services – North Zone is actively recruiting a Family Medicine Physician to establish a full-time practice in the community of Peace River, Alberta. This position will provide services for: Community Clinic, Emergency Room Coverage, Inpatient & Outpatient Services, & Long Term Care.

Once chosen, the successful candidate may choose to operate their business by joining an existing practice or opening their own practice. This is the candidate's independent business decision and will not be managed through the recruitment process.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Reside in and have as his/her primary residence within the community of Peace River
  • Establish and maintain full time community based practice within the community;
  • Obtain and maintain an AHS Medical Staff Appointment and appropriate privileges to provide the Services;
  • Provide call assistance as per call schedules, including full time participation in the Emergency Department call schedule, as required;
  • Abide by the AHS Medical Staff Bylaws, the AHS Medical Staff Rules and AHS policies;
  • Participate in quality improvement programs and initiatives undertaken within the Department of Family Medicine;
  • Participate in relevant Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs; 
  • Contribute to and participate in other administrative responsibilities, as assigned;
  • Work collaboratively with peers and care team colleagues in support of patient care

Peace River is a vibrant town in the heart of northwest Alberta. Geographically, the town has been gifted with some of the most breathtaking landscapes in all of Alberta. The town itself is set on the banks of the Peace River and the surrounding neighborhoods straddle the river valley, providing breathtaking views enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. A progressive theatre company is active in the community, the museum hosts monthly exhibitions, several music venues attract national acts on a regular basis and one of Alberta’s most popular two-day music festivals – Peace Fest – goes ahead each July, taking advantage of the long, warm summer nights. A network of trails straddle town and can accommodate running, hiking, biking and exploring. There is an eight kilometer paved path that runs along the river. Fishing, boating and photography are popular river pursuits. You will also find an indoor swimming pool, a hockey arena, several outdoor rinks, squash and racquetball courts, gymnasiums and numerous sports clubs within the community. Peace River is home to an impressive combination of businesses including locally owned downtown stores and restaurants, as well as nationally and internationally recognized retailers, attracting shoppers and diners from all corners of the northwest. The Town of Peace River is on hand and happy to provide more information, to answer any questions or to organize an orientation through a part of the world they would like everybody to experience and enjoy.

  • To Calgary: 8 hrs
  • To Red Deer: 6.5 hrs
  • To Grande Prairie: 2 hrs 

Seeing just under 17,000 emergency room visits per year, the Peace River Health Complex is an active 34-bed acute + 40-bed long-term care centre serving residents from a town of 6,881; with a catchment area of approximately 13,900 residents.

Home to a group of seventeen (17) physicians and a team of health care and support staff; the  Peace River Health Centre provides acute care & long-term care, obstetrics, surgery, 24-hour emergency care, an intensive care unit, rehabilitation, palliative care, pediatrics, respiratory therapy, x-ray and laboratory services.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current Alberta Practice Permit or valid CPSA Letter of Eligibility to practice in the advertised position (proof of to be included with application).
  • Recent and relevant experience (within the past 1-2 years) in all areas of practice required;
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS);
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
  • Pediatric Life Support (PALS);

 Desired Qualifications:

  • College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP)
  • Care of the Elderly Experience 
  • Rural Emergency Room Experience
