Job Description

Come work as Oculoplastics and Orbital Specialist with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)!

The Ophthalmology Department at Vancouver Hospital Eye Care Centre and the University of British Columbia are seeking applicants for the post of orbital and oculoplastic ophthalmologist.
Candidates must have Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status, be eligible for license to practice in British Columbia, have CMPA coverage, and have Royal College certification. Their training must include a minimum of one year training in an approved and recognized oculoplastics and orbital dedicated fellowship, with preference to those with two years training. The candidate will be required to maintain an office exclusively in Vancouver and preferably at the Eye Care Centre and provide oculoplastic and orbital care for the local population as well as serve referrals for the entire province. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the B.C. Human Rights Code.

This position provides admitting and operating privileges at the Vancouver General Hospital including the Eye Care Centre operating suite and procedure rooms as well as UBC Hospital. Successful candidates for this posting are expected also to provide oculoplastic subspecialty service to the pediatric population at BC Children’s Hospital and to apply for privileges there. The successful applicant must also apply for a teaching position at the University of British Columbia. No salary is provided for this position as it is based on fee for service billing.

Responsibilities include participation in the ophthalmology on-call rota and taking an active role in the teaching of medical students, oculoplastic fellows, ophthalmology and possibly plastic surgery residents, colleagues, and nurses, as determined by the division and department head. At a minimum this will involve supervising medical students one half day per week. Resident surgical teaching is expected in subspecialty clinics and during allocated OR time following guidelines of the university department. The successful candidate is expected to participate in departmental and hospital committees, attend departmental meetings, and to contribute significantly to clinical research.

Preference will be given to candidates with the potential to contribute significantly to the academic and administrative goals of the Department and University. An established record in oculoplastic and orbit surgery is preferred and the department will prioritize candidates with a track record in academic research and with a vision for how they would enhance current divisional excellence in academic research and education.

It is expected that the successful applicant should dedicate a portion of time to helping with complex orbital cases, in conjunction with other specialties if required, and avoid providing any comprehensive or generalized comprehensive care, other than when on call.

The candidate should provide 3 letters of reference indicating good character, records of service to the university and general community, competence in oculoplastic and orbit surgery, and a demonstrated record of publications and academic presentation, and successful teaching endeavours with medical students, residents and/or fellows.
