Job Description
Health PEI is seeking a full-time permanent General Internist for the Prince County Hospital in Summerside, beginning immediately.
Located in the city of Summerside, the Prince County Hospital is the second largest acute care hospital in the province. It is operated by Health PEI, a crown corporation responsible for the delivery of publicly funded health services in Prince Edward Island. Health PEI’s head office is located at 16 Garfield Street, Charlottetown, PEI.
The Prince County Hospital (PCH) is a 110 bed regional referral hospital serving western Prince Edward Island. It includes a six bed ICU and provides a wide range of specialty services, including Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Anesthesia, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics, ENT, and Psychiatry. As one of the Island’s two main acute care centres, PCH plays a vital role in delivering high quality, patient centered care to a diverse population.

Job Duties:
- Provide comprehensive General Internal Medicine services to residents and visitors of Prince Edward Island in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Conduct outpatient consultations and follow-up visits, including the assessment, diagnosis, and ongoing management of patients.
- Review, interpret, and communicate diagnostic test results, referrals, consultation reports and other pertinent clinical information to patients in a timely manner.
- Assess and manage referrals received from primary care providers, family physicians, emergency physicians, and other medical specialists.
- Provide General Internal Medicine consultation services for hospitalized patients through the inpatient consult service. Participate in the assessment and management of patients requiring critical care support, including providing Level IIa Intensive Care Unit (ICU) coverage.
- Participate in a shared overnight on-call rotation with other General Internal Medicine physicians to provide General Internal Medicine and ICU consultation coverage.
- Act as a consultant in General Internal Medicine, providing clinical expertise and support to physicians and primary care providers across Prince Edward Island.
- Collaborate with Nurse Practitioners, Physiotherapists, Pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement patient-centered care plans.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation and contribute to the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based healthcare services.
Hours of Work:
- Full-time hours for a salaried physician is defined as 37.5 hours per week; 1950 hours per year;
- Full-time contract-for-service hours is based on a maximum of 1,725 hours per year;
- On-call coverage as required.
Remuneration:
Health PEI offers multiple payment modality options:
- Fee-for-Service – Under this model, physicians are compensated for each service provided, in accordance with the Tariff of Fees outlined in the Physician Services Agreement. This model offers maximum flexibility in terms of scheduling, service volume, and practice style.
Physicians typically operate through a professional corporation, which may offer tax advantages. Most physicians are responsible for overhead costs, which average around 25% of total billings. While this model does not include paid employment benefits, physicians have access to negotiated benefits through the Physician Services Agreement.
- Salary – Physicians employed under the salaried model enter into an employee-employer relationship with Health PEI. The overhead costs are covered by Health PEI. This model includes a defined schedule, assigned duties, and a comprehensive suite of employment benefits such as:
- Health and dental coverage
- Paid vacation and sick leave
- Life insurance
- RRSP matching
Compensation: $193.44 per hour (equivalent to $377,208 annually for a 1.0 FTE)
- Contract-for-Service – Physicians working under a Contract for Service are compensated hourly, as outlined in the Physician Services Agreement. While this model does not include traditional employment benefits (e.g., paid vacation, health and dental, RRSP matching), it does provide access to negotiated benefits such as parental leave. The hourly rate includes an additional amount in lieu of benefits. The overhead costs are covered by Health PEI. This model may offer tax advantages for physicians who choose to incorporate.
Compensation: $232 per hour (equivalent to $400,200 annually for a 1.0 FTE)
- On call services beyond regular hours (nights and weekends) are reimbursed as per FFS model plus on call stipend in addition to the regular hours payment.
Incentives:
- Qualified and licensable candidates may be eligible for a return in service grant of up to $100,000 with a 3 year commitment to Health PEI pro-rated to the FTE.
- Eligible moving expense reimbursement of up to $10,000 is available;
- Opportunity to teach Medical Learners and Residents with faculty appointment at affiliated universities;
- CME cost is supported by the Medical Society of PEI.
- Access to hospital-based electronic patient record system with lab and x-ray reports from office; and
- Other incentives as per the Physician Services Agreement.
Certifications and Eligibility Requirements:
- Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certified or recognized equivalent.
- Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island
- Appointment to the Health PEI Medical Staff and appropriate privileging
- Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
- Work experience preferable with at least 1- 2 years of clinical experience working in Canada.
Atlantic Registry
As of May 1, 2023, physicians whose primary practice is in Atlantic Canada (and hold a general registration in either PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Newfoundland and Labrador) may be eligible to obtain registration to practice in all four Atlantic Canadian provinces via the Atlantic Registry.
