CHEO's Division of Emergency Medicine is seeking locum physicians to provide short-term clinical coverage in our Emergency Department. Applications are welcome from physicians trained in Emergency Medicine (FRCPC-EM or CCFP-EM) or Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
CHEO is a tertiary academic children's hospital serving Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec and Nunavut and is affiliated with the University of Ottawa. Our Emergency Department sees approximately 70,000 children and youth annually and provides care across the full spectrum of pediatric illness and injury, with immediate access to pediatric critical care, anesthesia, surgery, and comprehensive medical and surgical subspecialty services.
We offer flexible short-term locum opportunities, ranging from individual weekends to one-week coverage blocks. Scheduling can be arranged according to physician availability and departmental needs.
Locum physicians work independently within an experienced and highly supportive pediatric emergency team. The department is staffed by two to four emergency physicians throughout the day and evening, with only four hours of single-physician coverage overnight. Comprehensive pediatric medical and surgical subspecialty services and PICU support are readily available.
Physicians interested in a more focused scope of practice may also have the opportunity to work exclusively in our Ambulatory Zone, caring primarily for children and youth with lower-acuity illness and injury.
CHEO is an academic teaching hospital, and locum physicians may supervise and teach medical students, residents, and fellows during their shifts. We value the contribution of locum physicians to our educational mission and welcome those who enjoy working with learners.
We want locum physicians to feel comfortable and well supported from their first shift. Structured orientation and onboarding are provided, including Epic training for physicians who have not previously used our electronic medical record. Credentialing and scheduling are streamlined to facilitate short-term locum work.
