Job Description

Health PEI is seeking locum physicians to provide Hospitalist (inpatient care) services in Prince Edward Island at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown and Prince County Hospital in Summerside.

Hospitalists provide comprehensive inpatient care, including admission history and physical examinations, daily medical management, participation in multidisciplinary rounds, family conferences as needed, and discharge planning. Additional responsibilities include standby coverage during periods of high patient census and acute, targeted outpatient follow-up of recently discharged hospitalist patients.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital, located in Charlottetown, is the provincial referral centre for specialized hospital services. This 243-bed facility provides emergency, surgical, inpatient, and ambulatory care services.

Prince County Hospital, located in Summerside, is the second largest acute hospital in PEI. This 110-bed facility provides emergency, surgical, inpatient, and ambulatory services.

Beyond PEI’s iconic lighthouses and serene shores lies a workplace and experience as unique as the Island itself. At Health PEI, you will discover locum opportunities that extend beyond conventional healthcare. Physicians practice in collaborative, close-knit teams that value open communication and shared decision-making. You will play a vital role in supporting Islanders in one of Canada’s fastest-growing provinces while helping shape a healthier future for our communities.

Work–Life Balance

Health PEI is committed to supporting physician wellness and work–life balance. The Hospitalist model is designed to promote predictable scheduling, shared responsibility, and protected time away from work.

  • Alternating week schedules allow for extended periods off between clinical rotations.
  • Shared overnight on-call coverage reduces individual call burden.
  • Team-based care supports coverage during periods of high census.
  • Prince Edward Island offers short commute times, affordable living, and easy access to outdoor recreation, contributing to a balanced and sustainable lifestyle.

Start Date: Immediately for six months

Hours of work:

  • The Hospitalist Physician group generally provides 7-day coverage in full-time positions.
  • Daily hours are currently 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with on-call responsibilities beginning at 5:00 p.m.
  • Physicians typically work alternating weeks.
  • Part-time opportunities are available.

Remuneration:

  • Hospitalists are paid an hourly sessional rate of $202 per hour.
  • Premiums apply for after-hours, weekend, and statutory holiday work.
  • Weekend and holiday shifts are compensated at the applicable hourly rate plus a 25% premium.
  • Overnight on-call coverage is shared within the Hospitalist group and remunerated through an on-call retainer plus fee-for-service model.

Locum Benefits and Supports:

Short Term Locum

  • Reimbursement of the MCC-AMR Application Fee and PEI Application Fee
  • Reimbursement of the cost of locum license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of PEI.

  • Coverage of accommodations during the length of the locum stay on Prince Edward Island, up to a maximum of $300 per night with receipt or $200 per night without receipts, following guidelines outlined below.

For reimbursement for accommodations without receipt the following stipulations shall apply:

  • Reimbursement is limited to nights directly associated with scheduled workdays; day before, day after and days worked.
  • The physician must be in the province to be eligible for reimbursement for accommodation without receipt.
  • $100 per day stipend will be provided for the days worked during the locum period.
  • Paid actual travel time ($50/hour) from home province to Prince Edward Island and return will be covered.
  • Cost of one return travel to Prince Edward Island based on an economy airfare to a maximum of $2,000. If traveling by car, mileage will be reimbursed as determined by PEI Treasury Board Policy and bridge and road tolls reimbursed with submission of receipts. Reimbursement for travel by car is not to exceed the cost of economy airfare.
  • Coverage of car rental up to $1400 per week with receipt, associated with days worked.

Long Term Locum (Working at least 10 days a month for no less than 6 months with a defined start and end date)

  • Reimbursement of the MCC-AMR Application Fee and PEI Application Fee costs with Physicians Apply;
  • Reimbursement of cost of license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of PEI.
  • Coverage of dues with Medical Society of PEI.
