Job Description

The Division of Orthopaedics at St. Paul’s Hospital and Providence Health Care is seeking a Foot & Ankle Orthopaedic Surgeon who would be able to fill in as a locum for 6 months during a parental leave.

The successful candidate will have completed a subspecialty fellowship training in adult foot & ankle surgery and an orthopedic surgery residency to be able to handle single limb upper and lower extremity trauma.

The successful candidate will be expected to:
• Participate in the St. Paul’s Hospital Orthopaedic On-Call group
• Manage complex tertiary/quaternary foot & ankle reconstruction with confidence
• Meet the requirements for academic appointment to the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine
• Follow up post-surgical patients at Footbridge Clinic
• Participate in centralized intake for foot & ankle referrals
• Begin onboarding with a full-time provisional status with the hospital

The successful candidate will be mentored by foot and ankle surgeons. There will be a planned overlap period in September 2026 where the departing surgeon will be able to provide guidance and familiarize the locum with the local trends and patient care algorithms.

The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and will have demonstrated abilities to work within a complex tertiary care environment, to participate in teams providing multidisciplinary care, and to perform appropriate orthopaedic surgical procedures at the highest level in a cost & resource constrained environment.

Qualified applicants will hold an MD degree (or equivalent) and will have completed postgraduate and fellowship requirements prior to appointment. They will hold or be eligible for licensure with the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons and be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Orthopaedic Surgery.

St. Paul’s Hospital is a Level 3 trauma center and receives primarily single-limb trauma. It is also both a large tertiary care teaching hospital serving patients from across British Columbia and a downtown hospital in Vancouver serving the urban core and a diverse, often marginalized population. The successful applicant will be expected to capably manage a diverse range of general orthopaedic trauma, including upper and lower extremity fractures, as well as musculoskeletal infections and wounds.

The Division of Orthopaedics at St. Paul’s Hospital is currently comprised of 11 full-time and 2 part-time members with academic subspecialty interests in upper extremity reconstruction, foot & ankle, and arthroplasty.

Providence Health Care hires on the basis of merit and is committed to employment equality. We encourage all qualified persons to apply. However, Canadians and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority.

Interested candidates are invited to submit a letter of introduction outlining their qualifications and interest in the position, as well as a current CV and the names of three references.

Qualifications:
Current College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC) License (Full); Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) (Mandatory); Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) (Mandatory)
