Health PEI is seeking a locum Pediatrician to join a collegial group of 4 full-time pediatricians for the Pediatrics Department at the Prince County Hospital in Summerside for short-term assignments.

Located in Summerside, the Prince County Hospital is a 110-bed regional hospital that provides specialty services in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Anesthesia, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics, ENT and Psychiatry. The Pediatrics Department at the Prince County Hospital currently includes 4 Pediatricians.  There is a 8-bed inpatient pediatric unit and a 4-bed Level 2B NICU.

Pediatricians at the Prince County Hospital are responsible to:

• Provide general pediatric consultations and follow-up care for referrals from physicians and nurse practitioners from across PEI;
• Take part in the Pediatrics on-call schedule, providing general pediatric consultations for the hospital and ER, as well as neonatal resuscitation and NICU coverage after hours;
• Share care of pediatric oncology patients with our regional tertiary care center.

Hours of Work:

• Full-time hours and on-call coverage as required during the locum period.
• Participation is required for on-call services equitably shared among the group.

Remuneration Options:

Daily Rate:
•Monday – Friday, daytime hours (7.5 hr day) – $2,100
•Pediatrics On-Call Coverage (24 hr) – $3,350 (inclusive of retainer)
•Neonatology On-Call Coverage (24 hr) – $3,350 (inclusive of retainer)
•Pediatrics and Neonatology On-Call Coverage(24 hr) – $3,950 (inclusive of Pediatrics & Neonatology On-Call retainers)
•Neonatology Back up – $2100 for day work, Mon – Fri + $200 back up retainer + FFS for any work done after daytime hours

Locum Supports and Reimbursements:

Short Term Locum

• Reimbursement of the MCC-AMR Application Fee and PEI Application Fee
• Reimbursement of the cost of locum license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of PEI.
• Coverage of registration fees with the Medical Society of PEI.

Locums coming from out of province and who are not Island residents are also eligible for the following:

• Coverage of accommodations during the length of the locum stay on Prince Edward Island, up to a maximum of $300 per night with receipt or $200 per night without receipts, following guidelines outlined below.

For reimbursement for accommodations without receipt the following stipulations shall apply:

• Reimbursement is limited to nights directly associated with scheduled workdays; day before, day after and days worked.
• The physician must be in the province to be eligible for reimbursement for accommodation without receipt.
• $100 per day stipend will be provided for the days worked during the locum period.
• Paid actual travel time ($50/hour) from home province to Prince Edward Island and return will be covered.
• Cost of one return travel to Prince Edward Island based on an economy airfare to a maximum of $2,000. If traveling by car, mileage will be reimbursed as determined by PEI Treasury Board Policy and bridge and road tolls reimbursed with submission of receipts. Reimbursement for travel by car is not to exceed the cost of economy airfare.
• Coverage of car rental up to $1400 per week with receipt, associated with days worked.

Long Term Locum (Working at least 10 days a month for no less than 6 months with a defined start and end date)

• Reimbursement of the MCC-AMR Application Fee and PEI Application Fee costs with Physicians Apply;
• Reimbursement of cost of license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of PEI.
• Coverage of dues with Medical Society of PEI.

Locums coming from out of province and who are not Island residents are also eligible for the following:

• Accommodations:
  • 10 + days coverage per month – up to $5000 per month with receipts or $3000 per month without receipts.
• $50 per day stipend will be provided for the days worked during the locum period.
• Paid actual travel time ($50/hour) from home province to Prince Edward Island and return will be covered.
• Cost of one return travel to Prince Edward Island based on an economy airfare to a maximum of $2,000 with receipts. If traveling by car, mileage will be reimbursed as determined by PEI Treasury Board Policy and bridge and road tolls reimbursed with submission of receipts. Reimbursement for travel by car is not to exceed the cost of economy airfare.
• Coverage of car rental up to $1400 per week with receipts.

Certifications and Eligibility Requirements:

• FRCPC or eligibility for Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification;
• Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island; and
• Appointment to the Health PEI Medical Staff and appropriate privileging.
• NRP and PALS
• Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)
• Proficiency in English is required.

Atlantic Registry

Starting May 1, 2023, physicians whose primary practice is in Atlantic Canada (and hold a general registration in either PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Newfoundland and Labrador) may be eligible to obtain registration to practice in all four Atlantic Canadian provinces via the Atlantic Registry.
