Job Description

Alberta Health Services, Central Zone, and the Department of Pediatrics at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, invites applications for a Pediatrician to establish a full-time practice in the community of Red Deer. The Consultant Pediatrician is critical in delivering specialized pediatric care within the healthcare system, ensuring high-quality, comprehensive services across various clinical scenarios. Key responsibilities include: 

  • Emergency Department Support: Providing expert consultation for pediatric patients as the on-call pediatrician. 
  • Inpatient and Acute Care Management: Admitting and managing acutely ill pediatric patients in the hospital.
  • Coordinating the transfer of critically ill children to tertiary care centers when advanced care is required. 
  • Support for Rural Sites: Providing phone consultations to healthcare professionals from rural sites when on call, ensuring timely guidance and support for pediatric cases. 
  • Neonatal Care: Attending high-risk deliveries and performing neonatal resuscitations as necessary.
  • Admitting and managing acutely ill neonates in the local Level 2 NICU. 
  • Outpatient Consultation and Follow-Up: Evaluating and managing referred pediatric patients in outpatient clinics.
  • Conducting follow-up care for complex pediatric patients requiring ongoing management. 
  • Teaching and Mentorship: Collaborating with medical residents and students during clinical rotations, providing hands-on teaching and mentorship. 
  • Community and Specialized Support: Voluntary participation in the Central Alberta Sexual Assault Response Team (CASART), offering urgent and non-urgent assessments in both acute and outpatient settings. 
  • Collaborative Care: Consulting pediatric cases based on referrals from primary care and other specialties, ensuring coordinated and effective treatment plans.

 

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Reside in and have their primary residence within the community of Red Deer;
  • Obtain and maintain an AHS Medical Staff Appointment and appropriate privileges to provide the Services;
  • Abide by the AHS Medical Staff Bylaws, the AHS Medical Staff Rules and AHS policies;
  • Establish and maintain full time community based practice within the community;
  • Provide call assistance as per call schedules, including full time participation in the Pediatrics call schedule for neonatal and pediatric patients across Central Zone.
  • Participate in quality improvement programs and initiatives undertaken within the Zone Clinical Department of Pediatrics;
  • Participate in relevant Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs;
  • Contribute to and participate in other administrative responsibilities, as assigned;
  • Work collaboratively with peers and care team colleagues in support of patient care

Once chosen, the successful candidate may choose to operate their business by joining an existing independent outpatient practice or form an independent outpatient office of their own. This is the candidate's independent business decision and will not be managed through the recruitment process.
