Job Description
The Department of Critical Care Medicine is currently recruiting Outreach Physicians for the Intensive Care Units at all adult sites within the Calgary Zone. Under the supervision of attending intensivists, ICU outreach physicians provide service from 1700 to 0800 hours, seven days a week in the 5 multisystem ICUs of the Calgary Zone, and occasional day shifts (0800-1700) additionally in these ICUs. Outreach physicians are fully integrated into the critical care healthcare team, including residents, ICU fellows, resident extenders and attending intensivists. For committed applicants, a paid onboarding process combining a full week of integration into the daytime rounding and procedural practices of a busy ICU, along with two “buddy” night shifts with an experienced outreach physician will be provided. Additional supervised airway management skill development is available as needed.
As part of a specialized team, the outreach physician will provide medical care to a subset of patients in the ICU and ensure “tier one coverage” is available to provide service for ICU Outreach Team calls within the institution. Tier one response includes immediate attendance upon patients for the purpose of assessment and therapeutic intervention to address any conditions that may be immediately life-threatening and being immediately available on site in the ICU to provide care at the bedside under the supervision of an attending intensivist. These teams were created as a patient safety initiative to advance the “ICU without walls” concept. Activation of the team can occur by any concerned staff member on any unit of an acute care facility. Working with ward staff and the primary attending medical team, the ICU Outreach Team is expected to assess and stabilize the patient, assist with communication including clarifying and confirming patient specific Goals of Care, provide care advice as needed to the primary care team, educate and support staff who have activated the outreach team and assist with transferring the patient to the ICU when necessary (20 – 25% cases).
We’re passionate about what we do. Our team of skilled and dedicated health care professionals, support staff, and physicians promote wellness and provide health care every day, across the Calgary Zone. We are an equal opportunity employer. AHS values the diversity of the people and communities we serve and is committed to attracting, engaging, and developing a diverse and inclusive workforce.
