Job Description

Position Summary

Within the context of a patient and family-centered model of care, and in accordance with the Mission, Vision, Values and strategic directions of Providence Health Care (“Providence”), is seeking a General Surgeon with specialized expertise in complex hernia surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction, and robotic surgery to join the Department of Surgery at St. Paul’s Hospital, a tertiary and quaternary referral centre in Vancouver, BC.

The successful candidate will practice within a high-acuity academic environment, providing advanced surgical care while contributing to education, research, and leadership initiatives in alignment with PHC’s Mission, Vision, and Values.

Clinical Responsibilities

● Deliver comprehensive general surgical care with a focus on complex abdominal wall and hernia reconstruction, including high-risk and reoperative cases
● Perform advanced minimally invasive and robotic surgical procedures
● Participate in the Emergency General Surgery call schedule as required
● Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to provide patient-centred care
● Contribute to program development, quality improvement, and clinical innovation consistent with PHC priorities

Academic, Teaching, and Leadership Responsibilities

● Participate actively in undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education
● Provide supervision and mentorship to medical students, residents, and fellows
● Engage in scholarly activity, research, or quality improvement aligned with academic appointment expectations
● Demonstrate clinical and academic leadership, including participation in committees, program development, or administrative roles

Required Qualifications

● MD degree with completion of an accredited General Surgery residency program
● Fellowship training in Abdominal Wall Reconstruction with expertise in complex hernia surgery
● Formal training and demonstrated competence in robotic surgery
● Master’s degree (e.g., MSc, MPH, MEd, or equivalent)
● Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) or equivalent
● Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC)
● Demonstrated leadership experience in clinical, academic, or administrative roles
● Proven commitment to teaching and medical education

Academic Appointment

The successful candidate must be eligible for and apply for an academic appointment with the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Medicine, at a rank commensurate with experience.
