Job Description

Family Physician – Belleville, Ontario

Mizan Health is seeking a dedicated and community-oriented Family Physician to join our modern medical clinic located at 59 Dundas Street East, Belleville, Ontario.

This opportunity is suitable for a physician interested in providing comprehensive family medicine, episodic care, or a combination of both. The successful candidate will have the flexibility to develop their own patient panel and shape their practice according to their clinical interests, preferred schedule, and long-term professional goals.

Belleville and the surrounding Quinte region continue to experience a significant need for accessible primary care. The incoming physician will have an opportunity to establish a busy practice while helping improve access to timely, patient-centred medical services within the community.

Position Overview

The Family Physician will provide comprehensive and evidence-based primary care to patients across the lifespan. The physician will work collaboratively with clinic administrative and clinical support staff to assess, diagnose, treat, and manage acute and chronic medical conditions.

The practice may include scheduled family medicine appointments, same-day and walk-in visits, preventative care, chronic disease management, minor office procedures, and virtual care where clinically appropriate.

Physicians may choose to practise on a full-time, part-time, locum, or flexible basis. The clinic is open to physicians seeking a long-term community practice as well as those wishing to provide coverage on selected weekdays, evenings, or weekends.

Clinical Duties and Responsibilities

The successful physician will be responsible for:

  • Providing comprehensive primary care to pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Assessing and managing acute illnesses, injuries, and common medical concerns.
  • Diagnosing, treating, and monitoring chronic medical conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, asthma, COPD, thyroid disorders, and mental health conditions.
  • Conducting routine health examinations, periodic health visits, and age-appropriate preventative screening.
  • Providing immunizations, health counselling, lifestyle counselling, and disease-prevention education.
  • Offering women’s health services, which may include contraception counselling, cervical cancer screening, prenatal and postnatal care, and management of common gynecological concerns according to the physician’s scope of practice.
  • Providing pediatric care, including newborn and well-child assessments, developmental monitoring, immunizations, and management of common childhood illnesses.
  • Providing care for older adults, including medication reviews, falls-risk assessment, cognitive screening, and management of multiple chronic conditions.
  • Assessing and treating common mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, insomnia, stress-related conditions, and attention-related concerns within the physician’s competence and scope.
  • Reviewing laboratory investigations, diagnostic imaging, consultation reports, hospital records, and other relevant clinical information.
  • Ordering appropriate laboratory testing, imaging, and diagnostic investigations.
  • Initiating referrals to specialists, allied health professionals, community services, hospitals, and other appropriate healthcare resources.
  • Providing follow-up care after hospital admissions, emergency department visits, specialist consultations, and diagnostic investigations.
  • Prescribing and renewing medications in accordance with current clinical guidelines and professional standards.
  • Completing medically necessary forms, reports, certificates, insurance documentation, and third-party medical documentation when appropriate.
  • Providing virtual or telephone-based care when clinically appropriate and permitted under applicable professional and billing requirements.
  • Performing minor office procedures according to the physician’s training, interests, and scope of practice.

Optional Procedural and Focused-Practice Opportunities

Depending on the physician’s experience and clinical interests, the practice may also include:

  • Joint and soft-tissue injections.
  • Cryotherapy and treatment of common skin lesions.
  • Incision and drainage of uncomplicated abscesses.
  • Suturing and basic wound care.
  • Ear irrigation.
  • Pap testing and other office-based women’s health procedures.
  • Contraceptive procedures where appropriately trained.
  • Minor dermatologic procedures.
  • Sports medicine and musculoskeletal assessments.
  • Workplace, driver, insurance, and other third-party medical examinations.

Physicians are not required to provide all listed procedures. Scope of practice may be customized based on the physician’s qualifications and interests.

Professional and Administrative Responsibilities

The physician will be expected to:

  • Maintain complete, accurate, and timely electronic medical records.
  • Document patient encounters in accordance with College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario requirements.
  • Review and respond to laboratory results, diagnostic imaging, consultation reports, prescription requests, and other clinical correspondence in a timely manner.
  • Maintain appropriate continuity and follow-up systems for patients under their care.
  • Practise in accordance with CPSO policies, applicable legislation, privacy requirements, and accepted standards of medical care.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with the Personal Health Information Protection Act and other applicable privacy legislation.
  • Participate in reasonable clinic quality-improvement, patient-safety, and workflow initiatives.
  • Communicate respectfully and effectively with patients, families, clinic staff, pharmacists, specialists, hospitals, and community healthcare partners.
  • Collaborate with administrative and clinical team members to support safe, efficient, and coordinated patient care.
  • Maintain all professional licences, certifications, and continuing professional development requirements necessary to practise medicine in Ontario.

  • Support with clinic onboarding and practice setup.
  • Assistance with community promotion and patient recruitment.
  • Flexible scheduling based on physician availability.
  • Opportunities to develop a full family medicine practice or provide episodic and walk-in care.
  • Opportunities to collaborate with other family physicians, specialists, nurses, and allied healthcare providers as the clinic expands.
  • An established clinic website, online presence, and community marketing platform.
  • Convenient access for patients within Belleville and the surrounding Quinte region.

Practice Arrangement

Flexible practice arrangements are available, including:

  • Full-time family medicine.

A physician recruitment incentive through the City of Belleville or an applicable community physician recruitment program may be available to qualifying physicians.

Any incentive is subject to the eligibility criteria, approval process, return-of-service obligations, availability of funding, and contractual terms established by the applicable program.
