Job Description

Position Description:

Reporting to the Department Head of Psychiatry and the Medical Director in question, the psychiatrist is a specialist in understanding the biological, psychological and social factors of the human experience that affect the etiology, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and healing of mental, emotional, cognitive and behavioural disorders occurring on their own or concomitantly with other medical problems.

The psychiatrist ensures the assessment and diagnosis of mental disorders as well as treatment of and advocacy for people suffering from such disorders at all stages of their life. The psychiatrist works with patients in emergency, urgent and non-urgent situations. The psychiatrist’s activities are rooted in the physician-patient relationship, and they take place in various settings and with culturally diverse communities.

Psychiatric assessment aims to prevent and treat mental, emotional, cognitive and behavioural disorders and foster the recovery of patients who suffer from them.

Job Duties:

This is professional medical work performed by certified specialists (those with a specialty certification as recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of NB). Duties are performed with considerable clinical independence in the diagnosis, care and treatment of medical disorders within the scope of the specialty in which they are practicing. Work is performed with independent judgment but findings and observations may be subject to supervision and assessment by the physician’s Clinical (Program) Department Head / Chief of Service / Program Director in which the physicians works. Review of work may also be supervised by the local and regional Chiefs of Staff and the zone’s Medical Director for the Regional Health Authority (RHA). The physician works within the accordance of the RHA Bylaws.

Hours of Work:

Normal regular hours – 37.5 hours

After-hours and weekend calls are shared among all members of the Department.

This is a fixed-term locum position for a period of 12 months, with the possibility of permanent employment upon completion of the contract.

Qualifications:

  • Certification from the Royal College of Physicans and Surgeons of Canada certification (FRCPC) or American Board certification;
  • Graduate from an approved school of medicine supplemented by post-graduate study in the area of specialization (Psychiatry);
  • Eligible for a licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New-Brunswick;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Physical ability to perform the assigned work;
  • Good work history (performance and attendance);
  • Adherence to professional ethical principles, the Network’s management philosophy, and organizational values;
  • Compliance with the rules of confidentiality set by Vitalité Health Network
  • Written and spoken competence in English and French is required.

The Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre (UHC), located in the heart of the City of Moncton, is the lead facility of Vitalité Health Network.

This 302-bed hospital provides primary, specialized, and tertiary (more complex) care using cutting-edge technology. It provides services in both official languages. The Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont UHC serves patients from New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia.

A 65-bed lodge welcomes cancer patients originating from outside the immediate Moncton area.
