Job Description

Description

The Department of Medicine and the Division of Neurology at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital is looking for an Epilepsy Clinician Investigator to join a rapidly expanding Ottawa Hospital Adult Epilepsy Program (ottawaepilepsyprogram.ca).

The Division of Neurology is renowned for the delivery of outstanding care and is recognized internationally for its programs, including neuromuscular, MS, neuro-ophthalmology, movement disorders, epilepsy, and stroke. Members of the Division have a wide range of clinical and basic science research skills. Their work includes cutting-edge clinical trials, translational research, and epidemiology. In addition to modern outpatient clinical units, the Division has a 4 bed EMU, 20 bed inpatient general neurology unit, 15 bed stroke inpatient unit, and consult services at both campuses of The Ottawa Hospital.

The Ottawa Hospital is a 1445-bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). The hospital provides approximately 67,450 inpatient admissions, 178,200 emergency visits and one million ambulatory care visits annually.

Ground-breaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. We rank among the top 4 hospitals in Canada for Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funded research and overall research funding. Over 2,300 researchers, trainees, and staff contribute to a highly productive research environment, generating more than 2,200 scientific publications annually, including many high-impact studies.

The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive department supporting a large and diverse academic community. Our members are leaders in advancing clinical care, research excellence, and academic excellence.

The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader in medical education and research, contributing significantly to the University of Ottawa’s standing among Canada’s top research-intensive universities. The University of Ottawa is the largest bilingual (English/French) university in the world, and the Faculty of Medicine is the first and largest bilingual medical school in Canada.

The City of Ottawa offers a vibrant, multicultural, and bilingual environment with access to diverse cultural, recreational, and outdoor activities, making it an excellent place to live and work.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work in both outpatient and inpatient environments. Outpatient clinics are supported by 2 nurses. Inpatient care includes a 4 bed EMU. Epilepsy surgeries are performed at an NAEC level III equivalent, including temporal lobectomies, callosotomies, VNS implantations and DBS implantations. The EEG laboratory has 3 cEEG machines used primarily in critical care, 4 routine video EEG machines and the ability to perform ambulatory video EEG monitoring for outpatients. The program includes outpatient clinics in general epilepsy as well as specialized care in the First Seizure Clinic, Women with Epilepsy and a Transitional Clinic for pediatric patients graduating from the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).

The individual will be expected to engage in all program activities including; 1) evaluation and management of epilepsy patients in inpatient and outpatient settings, including subspecialty clinics, 2) interpret diagnostic standard, ambulatory, ICU and continuous video-EEG monitoring (EMU), 3) perform epilepsy pre-surgical evaluations, 4) participate in outpatient general neurology clinics and on the neurology inpatient and consultation services, 5) educate clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy fellows, 6) precept medical students and neurology residents. We offer a 6-month EEG fellowship as well as a 12-month epilepsy fellowship.

The successful candidate would lead the development of epilepsy research activities with a focus on clinical trials.

The physician will participate in the Neurology on-call rotation on a regular basis and expected to cover the EMU over weekends with resident support as per the on-call schedule. The incumbent will be expected to participate in a variety of clinical duties as well as education and academic opportunities and initiatives at the University of Ottawa.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be fellowship trained in epilepsy/EEG with experience in epilepsy monitoring (EMU, cEEG, Ambulatory EEG) and management of epilepsy in the outpatient and inpatient settings and must hold added subspecialty certification in Epilepsy and/or Clinical Neurophysiology. A track record of peer-reviewed publications and post-fellowship clinical experience in epilepsy monitoring is also desired.

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have, or be eligible for certification in Neurology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada; are expected to hold or challenge for the CSCN (EEG) examination; and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario. The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of an Assistant Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.

Job Benefits

The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as honorariums/stipends. Health and welfare benefits including extended health, dental and disability insurance as well as life insurance are offered to full-time physicians.

Additional Information

The Department of Medicine is committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, and encourages applications from individuals from equity-deserving groups. Accommodations are available upon request throughout the recruitment process.

Please note Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. We sincerely thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
