Job Description

Position profile – The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is seeking a physician for the position of Provincial Pharmacy Medical Director. The Medical Director will function collaboratively with team members to discuss and communicate issues and collaborate in the development of recommendations related to the Drug and Therapeutics Committee (DTC) and associated responsibilities. The Provincial Pharmacy Medical Director is accountable to and will report to the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Provincial Physician Affairs.Duties will include but are not limited to:
  • Serve as Co-Chair SHA DTC committee and collaborate with the pharmacy team in developing priorities, agendas and action plans pertaining to the work of the committee as outlined in the Terms of Reference.
  • Foster physician partnerships within the Saskatchewan Health Authority with physicians interested in the evidence informed, cost effective utilization of medications.
  • Foster physician partnerships within the Saskatchewan Health Authority with physicians demonstrating an interest and education around medication-use safety and quality, including medication reconciliation at transitions of care.
  • Foster physician partnerships within Saskatchewan Health Authority for the identification and reporting of serious adverse drug reactions and medical device incidents to Health Canada in compliance with the Protecting Canadians from Unsafe Drugs Acts (aka Vanessa’s Law).
  • Create and sustain a workplace environment that fosters; the application evidenced informed practices, compliance with regulations and accreditation standards, supporting clinical research utilization, and managing risk and adverse events in collaboration with corporate resources.
  • Improve the quality of care and, specifically, support for developing a strategy to implement improvements in safety pertaining to medication use for both staff and patients throughout the organization.
  • Foster a collaborative approach between physicians and pharmacists in situations where care provision has not met care standards. This involves participation in or awareness of investigation, documentation and follows up of all critical incidents that occur within the Authority, while supporting other operational areas to facilitate their own investigation and follow up of adverse events. Provide strategic input into the accreditation readiness with the help and assistance of others from different portfolios.
  • Work effectively with Pharmacy and Medical Leadership to ensure evidence informed cost-effective use of medications.
  • Provide physician executive level leadership for medication related policy.
  • Collaborate with the MRP and Pharmacy leaders on appropriateness of use of non-formulary high cost medications in emergent situations and advise senior leadership on recommendation for use.
  • Other duties as mutually agreed to between the Medical Director and the Authority.
  • Assist in developing diverse strategies and initiatives to strengthen physician engagement in evidence informed, medication related policy.

    Qualifications:

  • Licensed medical practitioner in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan (CPSS)
  • Canadian Certified Physician Executive Credential would be an asset
  • Advanced education in Health Care Administration, Public Administration and/or Leadership Studies would be an asset
  • Participation in the Canadian Medical Association’s Physician Leadership Institute would be an asset
  • Additional training and/or education in leadership/management would be an asset
  • Experience, at an operational level, as a medical leader who has worked in partnership with administrative leaders to develop and lead innovative planning and programs in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment
  • Has knowledge of and experience in guiding health quality improvement processes and initiatives
