Health PEI is looking for locum Radiation Oncologists to join the collegial, multi-disciplinary team within the Provincial Oncology program for short- and long-term assignments, up to one year.

Radiation Oncologists work closely within the physician team in the Department of Oncology to provide essential care at the PEI Cancer Treatment Centre. As a community-based centre, a comfort level treating most tumor sites is an asset. The centre has a state-of-the-art CT simulation suite and two TrueBeam treatment units capable of completing SBRT and cranial SRT/SRS. Day to day responsibilities include outpatient consultation and follow-up clinics, on-treatment review and treatment supervision of advanced techniques. Participation in the on-call schedule is also required.

The Prince Edward Island Cancer Treatment Centre is located at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown, PEI.

Position:

• Full-time, short and long-term locums positions available, commencing immediately.
• Length of contract negotiable.
• Please note that this competition may be used to fill future vacancies.

Job Duties:

• The Physician is a licensed medical specialist who provides inpatient, outpatient, and consultative Radiation Oncology services.
• The Physician will act as a consultant in Radiation Oncology and work collaboratively with other health care workers such as Referring Physicians, Medical Oncologists, Oncology Clinical Associates, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Pharmacists, etc. to plan and deliver competent health services.
• The Physician will perform non-clinical duties as assigned by the Department Head and the Chief Medical Officer including quality improvement committees.
• The Physician will provide an office and hospital-based practice including being responsible for follow-up patient care and information by reporting all pertinent test results, referrals, consultations, etc. in a timely manner to the patient.
• The Physician is required to participate equitably in an on-call schedule, based on the full-time equivalence of their position, with individual commitment to be not more frequently than averaging 1 in 3 call schedule (122 days/year). The Physician shall cooperate in the development of an on-call/vacation schedule.

Hours of Work:

• Typical business hours Monday–Friday with occasional after-hours work required.
• Positions require participation in Provincial Oncology on-call schedule.

Remuneration:

• Contract hourly rate of $267; or
• Fee For Service.

Locum Supports and Reimbursements:

Short Term Locum

• Reimbursement of the MCC-AMR Application Fee and PEI Application Fee
• Reimbursement of the cost of locum license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of PEI.
• Coverage of registration fees with the Medical Society of PEI.

Locums coming from out of province and who are not Island residents are also eligible for the following:

• Coverage of accommodations during the length of the locum stay on Prince Edward Island, up to a maximum of $300 per night with receipt or $200 per night without receipts, following guidelines outlined below.

For reimbursement for accommodations without receipt the following stipulations shall apply:

• Reimbursement is limited to nights directly associated with scheduled workdays; day before, day after and days worked.
• The physician must be in the province to be eligible for reimbursement for accommodation without receipt.
• $100 per day stipend will be provided for the days worked during the locum period.
• Paid actual travel time ($50/hour) from home province to Prince Edward Island and return will be covered.
• Cost of one return travel to Prince Edward Island based on an economy airfare to a maximum of $2,000. If traveling by car, mileage will be reimbursed as determined by PEI Treasury Board Policy and bridge and road tolls reimbursed with submission of receipts. Reimbursement for travel by car is not to exceed the cost of economy airfare.
• Coverage of car rental up to $1400 per week with receipt, associated with days worked.

Long Term Locum (Working at least 10 days a month for no less than 6 months with a defined start and end date)

• Reimbursement of the MCC-AMR Application Fee and PEI Application Fee costs with Physicians Apply;
• Reimbursement of cost of license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of PEI.
• Coverage of dues with Medical Society of PEI.

Locums coming from out of province and who are not Island residents are also eligible for the following:

• Accommodations:
  • 10 + days coverage per month – up to $5000 per month with receipts or $3000 per month without receipts.
• $50 per day stipend will be provided for the days worked during the locum period.
• Paid actual travel time ($50/hour) from home province to Prince Edward Island and return will be covered.
• Cost of one return travel to Prince Edward Island based on an economy airfare to a maximum of $2,000 with receipts. If traveling by car, mileage will be reimbursed as determined by PEI Treasury Board Policy and bridge and road tolls reimbursed with submission of receipts. Reimbursement for travel by car is not to exceed the cost of economy airfare.
• Coverage of car rental up to $1400 per week with receipts.

Certifications and Eligibility Requirements:

• FRCPC or eligibility for Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification
• Eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island.
• Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
• Eligible for appointment to the Health PEI Medical Staff with appropriate privileging.
• Work experience preferable with at least 1- 2 years of clinical experience working in Canada.
• Ability to drive and travel the island to various locations.

Atlantic Registry

Starting May 1, 2023, physicians whose primary practice is in Atlantic Canada (and hold a general registration in either PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Newfoundland and Labrador) may be eligible to obtain registration to practice in all four Atlantic Canadian provinces via the Atlantic Registry.
