Job Description

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) and the University of Saskatchewan, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, are seeking a General Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Specialist in Regina, Saskatchewan, on a contractual basis in the form of an Academic Clinical Funding Plan. We are looking for a passionate, innovative, patient and family-centred care physiatrist that thrives in an interdisciplinary care environment. The successful candidate will be joining a collaborative group of physiatrists in a tertiary rehabilitation setting and provide service to patients in a number of rehabilitation programs as well as clinical teaching of medical students and residents. As one of two Tertiary Rehabilitation Programs in Saskatchewan, the physiatrist provides care to patients from across the province.As a key member of the interdisciplinary care team, the PM&R program supports a collaborative working relationship between all team members including, physiatrists, nursing, social work, therapy staff and allied health team members, resulting in high-quality patient outcomes. Services are provided in both inpatient and outpatient settings at Wascana Rehabilitation Centre as well as an acute care consultation service at Regina General, Pasqua Hospitals and Regional Centres upon request. Mutual feedback and collaborative problem-solving are essential and are upheld as key quality standards in this area.The Wascana Rehabilitation Center (WRC) in Regina is home to the following programs:
  • Inpatient Rehabilitation – 33 beds
  • Outpatient Adult Rehabilitation Program provides services to adults with diagnoses of stroke, spinal cord injury, acquired brain injury, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular and other long-term neurological illnesses, as well as musculoskeletal disorders including trauma, amputations, arthritis and post-surgical orthopedic cases. Orthotics, Prosthetics and Specialized Seating Services are co-located within the building, supporting an interdisciplinary team approach to care.
  • Children’s Program provides rehabilitation services to children from Southern Saskatchewan.
  • Continuing Care Programs are co-located in the building and include convalescent care (42 beds), short stay (18 beds), specialized long term care (235 beds), and hemodialysis, thus supporting care of patients with complex co-morbidities or requiring an alternate level of complex care.
  • Physiatry Services include the following:
  • Providing acute care consultations, including arranging for the admission and/or disposition of patients who may require physiatry services and/or admission to WRC.
  • Providing a full spectrum of outpatient physiatry clinics, including but not limited to: amputee, stroke, spinal cord injury, acquired brain injury, MS, neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders, and electrodiagnostic (EMG) services.
  • Leading multi-disciplinary inpatient rounds for rehabilitation inpatients. This includes providing physiatry related care needs in coordination with Family Practice Most Responsible Providers (MRPs).
  • Providing medical direction as required to nurses, therapists, residents and other members of the healthcare team as required in the management of patients.
  • Working collaboratively with SHA Rehabilitation Leaders to identify gaps, develop patient-centred solutions, and facilitate system flow through appropriate bed utilization.
  • Participation in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Leadership opportunities, including collaborative research.
  • The University of Saskatchewan is a research-intensive institution with 26,000 students and 6,500 faculty and staff, and a strong reputation for innovation and excellence. The College of Medicine has an intake of 100 students per year with a commensurate number of positions for residency training. The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has distributed training sites in Saskatoon and Regina (https://medicine.usask.ca/department/clinical/physical-medicine.php.).The Regina Campus of the College of Medicine is actively involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. It is the expectation that the successful applicant will facilitate the learning of undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees.

    Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will have the ability to obtain and maintain a regular license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan and obtain and maintain membership on the SHA Practitioner Staff. Preference will be given to applicants with an interest and experience in hospital-based medicine.
  • This individual should be a team player, be able to interact effectively with patients, colleagues, staff and management, and function well in a high-volume environment with a commitment to the provision of high-quality patient and family-centred care.
  • All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; in accordance with immigration requirements, preference will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada.
  • The SHA requires a criminal record check (CRC) from every potential SHA team member. The CRC must be dated within the past six (6) months and be satisfactory to the SHA. A vulnerable sector check (VSC) is required for individuals providing patient/resident/client care to vulnerable persons.
