Job Description
Deep River and District Health (DRDH) is seeking Hospitalist coverage in the coming weeks from Friday, March 13 to Friday, March 20, 2026
Description: The Hospitalists' primary duties are to provide care to all inpatients on the acute care medical unit, while working alongside our Charge Nurse and multi-disciplinary team. The Hospitalist is the most responsible physician (MRP) for up to 18 patients between 0600-2300 hrs. You are not required to stay onsite during these hours and there is no overnight call requirements. Patient demographics varies, with an average quarter of patients deemed as ALC and awaiting Long-Term Care placement. You would be expected to participate in case conferences, family meetings, discharge planning rounds and other regular hospitalist duties. You are asked to be within a 30-45 minute recall for urgent issues requiring your presence on the ward between 0600-2300 hrs.
The Hospitalist would be available during their call hours for new admission to the medical floor, and would participate in timely rounding and effective discharges for patients. Weeks are scheduled for 7 days at a time, starting Fridays at 0600hr. Handover between the outgoing & incoming physicians must occur, typically on Thursday afternoon or Friday morning. The Hospitalist would participate in case conferences, meetings, consultations, transfers, etc. for patients as required with members of the care team. Communicate discharge plans to the receiving community physician or nurse practitioner in a manner that optimizes continuity of care.
Background: Deep River and Ditrict Health is a small, rural hospital with a catchment area of ~12,000. Our site has laboratory, x-ray and ultrasound services available. Our site is live with Epic EMR and integrated with participating Hospitals within the region. Our nearest hospital for specialist and advanced imaging support is Pembroke Regional Hospital, approximately 40 minutes from our site. The nearest tertiary care centers are The Ottawa Hospital and Queens Way Carleton Hospital, both of which provide exceptional support to for our patients. Our usual hospitalist coverage is provided by our local family doctor groups in a 1:7 rotation.
Requirements: Valid CPSO & proof of CMPA coverage. New grads welcome.
Payment: $750/daily stipend. Complete your own and keep all FFS billings.
Additional Information: As Hospitalist, you have the option of providing second-call coverage to the Emergency Department at Deep River. Second-call 24hrs/day and is compensated at $350/24 hours. The 2nd On Call Physician is not frequently contacted. If contacted, it would be to assist/support the Emergency Physician. This would most commonly be for significantly ill or injured patients, if a physician is required for ambulance transfer, assistance with a procedure, or other. FFS billings apply if called into the department.
