Job Description

CARDIOLOGY

NIAGARA HEALTH

The Department of Medicine, Service of Cardiology at Niagara Health (NH) seeks a highly motivated physician with a passion for providing the highest quality care to join the NH Medical Staff. The selected candidate will have a proven track record of innovation and a commitment to exemplary patient care.

Applicants should be certified (or eligible for certification) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the American Board of Internal Medicine (Cardiology) and must be licensed (or eligible for licensure) in the province of Ontario through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Applicants with interests in general cardiology, echocardiography, and heart failure are especially encouraged to apply.

Niagara Health offers a comprehensive and advanced cardiac program.

The successful candidate will join a robust cardiology team providing care supported by:

  • A cardiac catheterization laboratory
  • A pacemaker program
  • Full-spectrum non-invasive cardiac diagnostics, including:
    • Transthoraic and Transesophageal Echocardiogram
    • Routine and pharmacologic stress testing
    • Exercise stress echocardiography
    • Nuclear myocardial perfusion imaging
    • Holter and event monitoring
    • Cardiac CT angiography
    • Cardiac MRI

These resources support timely diagnosis, advanced management strategies, and collaborative care across the continuum.

A Strong Team Culture

The cardiology division is defined by its cohesive nature and strong camaraderie, fostering an environment of mutual respect, shared clinical excellence, and ongoing mentorship. New recruits will find an engaged team committed to supporting one another both professionally and personally.

A Practice-Friendly Jurisdiction

Ontario continues to be a favorable province for cardiac diagnostics, with no current moratorium on echocardiography, enabling cardiologists to provide uninterrupted and accessible imaging services to patients.

About Niagara Health

Niagara Health is a regional healthcare provider with multiple sites and a growing network of community-based and virtual services. We believe that every person in our region deserves to live every day of their life in the best health possible. As a community-based academic center, our focus on teaching and learning, research, innovation, and partnership propels us to continually improve care and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

Our team is made up of more than 7,300 employees, physicians, and volunteers who we count on to deliver Extraordinary Caring. Every Person. Every Time. Our Accreditation with Exemplary Standing is a clear demonstration of the team’s commitment to the highest safety and quality standards.

We provide a full range of acute care hospital services to the 450,000 residents across the Niagara region, and we are one of the few hospitals in Ontario that also owns and operates a long-term care facility.

Creating a healthy community is a collaborative effort. The courage and hope demonstrated by so many during the COVID-19 pandemic inspire us to continue to work with community partners to improve the health and well-being of our region.

Current group:

  • 12 Cardiologists

Call:

  • Overnight call approximately 3 nights per month

The Practice:

  • Hospital rotations include daytime cardiology consultation service, Level 2 CCU, stress testing, heart function clinic, holter monitor interpretation and echo coverage
  • Competitive compensation with no overhead

Academic Affiliations:

Since its founding in 1966, innovation has been the hallmark of McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and a major contributor to its international reputation for excellence.

The medical school has expanded to a regional campus in Niagara, which is located at Brock University. Students at the Niagara Regional Campus complete their clinical rotations in one of the six area hospitals with teaching done by the highly skilled and motivated hospital physicians.

Opportunities for strengthening and building strong academic partnerships are a priority for the NHS as the hospital has expanded into this new facility. We are interested in Physicians who will pursue a university faculty appointment and participate in academic activities within a strong regional community hospital setting. Research opportunities abound at Niagara Health and all new members will be onboarded to support our current research efforts. In addition, opportunities to lead research projects locally will be supported by the hospital and division.

In addition to McMaster, the Niagara Health System is building strong ties with other regional academic providers such as Brock University and Niagara College.

Tertiary Care:

  • Hamilton Health Sciences 1 hour away
  • Satellite Cath lab located at St. Catharine’s General Hospital.

Qualifications Required:

  • Independent license with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)
  • FRCP(C) in Cardiology or American Board of Internal Medicine Cardiology
  • Eligible to work in Canada without restrictions
  • Proficiency in both official languages (English and French) will be considered an asset.
