Job Description

The Department of Surgery, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, at the Hospital for Sick Children is inviting applications for a full time academic Paediatric Orthopaedic Spine surgeon. The effective date of this appointment is as soon as possible.

Primary Description

Responsibilities include clinical, scholarly, and administrative duties, as required.  The clinical component of the position will include a substantial commitment to the care of children with spinal deformities. Ability to manage spinal conditions at the highest level is required for this position. This includes adolescent idiopathic, early onset, neuromuscular, congenital, and syndromic scoliosis as well as spondylolysis/listhesis, cervical spine disorders, and other associated conditions. Other clinical duties include participation in the emergency Orthopaedic call schedule at SickKids. The candidate should have a strong academic background and is expected to complement the Division’s scholarly productivity. A scholarly focus on research, education, or global health is welcomed. Clinical and scholarly time allocation will be negotiated based upon the candidate’s qualifications, scholarly productivity, and academic plan. All candidates must be able to function proficiently in English, hold an MD, MBBS or the equivalent.

Additional Description

The successful candidate should be a recently qualified fellowship trained surgeon with outstanding potential, or an established surgeon with an international reputation. The candidate will provide effective and collaborative leadership at the hospital, provincial, national and international level. Start-up support and mentorship will be provided for the successful candidate. The candidate must be eligible for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto and be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Commensurate with qualifications and experience, remuneration will be in the range of $300,000 - $500,000 per year.

Hospital/Division Description

The children and families we care for are diverse, and so are our employees. All are welcome to join our unique organizational culture and be part of our inclusive team.

The Hospital for Sick Children is strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from racialized persons, persons of colour, women, Indigenous/Aboriginal People of North America, persons with disability, LGBTQ+ persons, and others who may contribute to further diversification of ideas.

The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery is comprised of eight full-time and two part-time academic surgeons, six paediatric orthopaedic fellows, as well as orthopaedic residents on rotation. We are well supported by advance practice physiotherapists, nurse practitioners, orthopaedic technologists, and administrative staff.

SickKids, located at 555 University Avenue in downtown Toronto, is among the largest children’s hospitals in North America and has a long history of excellence in clinical care, research, and education. SickKids is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and is located adjacent to the University campus and to numerous specialty hospitals and biomedical research institutes. It is an exciting time at SickKids as we execute our campus redevelopment project, including a new state-of-the-art acute care hospital tower.

Toronto is a vibrant and multicultural city, having been named the 2nd most diverse city in the world by the UN, with over 51% of its residents born outside of Canada and home to over 230 ethnic groups, which is reflected in the city’s neighbourhood food scene and talents in key sectors like life science, finance, information, and communications technology. It is currently the fourth largest city in North America and boasts a safe, livable, downtown area with excellent housing, schools, and university access. It is consistently ranked as a top travel spot and internationally ranked as one of the world’s most livable cities. World famous lake and wilderness country and year-round outdoor recreation are easily accessible, as are two hub airports for regional or international travel.

Application instructions

Applications will be accepted until November 30 2025.
