Join Covenant Health as a Clinical Associate – Surgery (General & Vascular Surgery)
Covenant Health invites applications for Clinical Associate positions within the Department of Surgery at Grey Nuns Community Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta.
Clinical Associates are fully licensed physicians who provide surgical patient coverage and support within Covenant Health's Acute Care Coverage (ACC) program and associated surgical services. Working collaboratively with surgeons, residents, nursing staff, and allied health team members, Clinical Associates contribute to the delivery of safe, timely, and high-quality care for surgical patients.
This recruitment is for opportunities within both General Surgery and Vascular Surgery.
About the Role
Clinical Associates support surgical services through a collaborative, team-based care model. Responsibilities may include after-hours inpatient coverage, patient assessment and management, surgical admissions, consultations, and coordination of care with the Most Responsible Physician (MRP).
Coverage opportunities vary by service:
General Surgery
- Primarily focused on after-hours, overnight, weekend, and ACC coverage.
- Provides support for surgical inpatients and urgent clinical issues requiring physician assessment and intervention.
Vascular Surgery
- Includes after-hours ACC coverage as well as daytime Monday–Friday clinical coverage.
- Daytime coverage is separate from the ACC program and involves supporting vascular surgery patient care and service needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide medical and surgical patient coverage for inpatient surgical services.
- Assess and manage acute clinical issues requiring physician intervention.
- Complete admissions, consultations, and urgent patient assessments as required.
- Collaborate closely with surgeons and Most Responsible Physicians regarding patient management and escalation of care.
- Support timely clinical decision-making and patient flow across surgical services.
- Work effectively within an interdisciplinary team that includes physicians, residents, nursing staff, and allied health professionals.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
Schedule
This position does not have a defined FTE and offers flexibility based on operational requirements.
Successful candidates will be expected to commit to a minimum number of shifts annually. Scheduling expectations and availability requirements will be discussed during the recruitment process.
Qualifications:
· Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent.
· Licensed or eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
· Demonstrated commitment to quality care, patient safety, and diversity, equity and inclusion
· Understanding of Just Culture principles in healthcare.
Preferred
Working knowledge of Connect Care (Epic).
Qualifications:
· Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent.
· Licensed or eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
· Demonstrated commitment to quality care, patient safety, and diversity, equity and inclusion
· Understanding of Just Culture principles in healthcare.
