Workplace Description:
The Miramichi Regional Hospital is a 160-bed hospital with a full range of primary care and specialty services, including: family medicine and hospitalist, general and orthopedic surgery, internal medicine and intensive care, urology, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, pediatrics, anesthesia and pathology. We occasionally arrange transfer for cardiac and trauma patients to referral sites a few hours away.
In the ED, we are supported by mental health nurses, 24/7 Respiratory Therapists, and virtual neurology and trauma programs. We see an approximate volume of 24,000 patients per year with a variety of high and low acuity patients

The Miramichi Regional Hospital Emergency Department (ED) is actively seeking a permanent full-time or part-time Emergency Medicine (EM) physician to complement our group of 12 physicians.
Our department offers 8-9 hour shifts with 14 or more hours of double coverage daily. The full-time position includes 29 hours per week with no call requirements. Part-time positions can also be arranged. We provide excellent shift flexibility for specific scheduling needs and vacation requests. We often accommodate additional vacation time (greater than 6 weeks per year) with the ability to flex hours. We are a very collegial group who help one another on shift, at handover time and with scheduling requests.

Remuneration:
Alternative Funding Plan (AFP)
Remuneration for the position is based on New Brunswick Medicare’s Alternate Funding Plan (AFP)
Remuneration is based on an average sessional rate of $241/hour. No shadow billing is required. Full-time physicians who take 6 weeks of vacation typically gross $320,000+ per year.
Additional financial benefits offered by the Horizon Health Network, Government of New Brunswick or New Brunswick Medical Society include:
- A rural recruitment incentive of $100,000 for a 4-year return of service
- Relocation expenses reimbursed up to $8,000
- CME reimbursements of $5,959 per year for registration and travel costs
- Generous CMPA reimbursement (currently 100% of annual dues)
- A retention program offering an annual financial incentive (ranging from $3,300-$7,700)
- Reimbursement for the EM Review CCFP(EM) Exam Prep Course ($3,000) for those who qualify for the NB Physician Bursary program; see EMReview.ca for details
Qualifications:
- A medical degree is required
- The following certifications are desired, but not required:
- Certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada with added Competency in Emergency Medicine (CCFP-EM)
- Certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Emergency Medicine (FRCPC-EM)
- Certification with the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM)
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (FRCEM), or equivalent.
- A plan to achieve this level of certification within 5 years of hiring is encouraged
- Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick
- ATLS and ACLS certification or completion within 6 months of hiring
- Proficiency in English; bilingual skills are considered an asset

Horizon’s Miramichi Regional Hospital is situated in the northeastern part of New Brunswick in the city of Miramichi.
The hospital provides health care services to the city of Miramichi and its surrounding communities, which have broad roots in Irish and Scottish descent, and includes four vibrant Francophone communities and three progressive First Nation communities covering a catchment population of 46,000.
The hospital is a partner of the Dalhousie New Brunswick Distributed Medical Education Program and was the inaugural site for the Dalhousie Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship Program, an innovative 48-week clinical experience for third year medical students which has since expanded to include other sites in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The hospital also supports the clinical experience of nursing, therapeutic and diagnostic students.
The hospital offers a full complement of health care services, including General Surgery, Urology, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology and Oncology services. A large variety of ambulatory care services are also provided including a Healthy Kids Pediatric Ambulatory Care program.
The facility is home to state-of-the-art Diagnostic Equipment, including a 64-slice CT scanner and Accredited Digital Mammogram machines. A new ambulatory oncology clinic opened in 2017, and a new Geriatric Program opened in 2018.
