ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
NL Health Services – Eastern Rural Zone has two (2) full-time Emergency Medicine positions available at Carbonear General Hospital in Carbonear, NL. These positions are fee-for-service and available immediately.
ER shifts are allocated in an equitable and predictable templated format. Emergency MD shifting is solo, with ER Nurse Practitioner support from 8:00am–4:00pm on weekdays. Second Emergency MD shifting is also utilized during peak periods. The position involves a minimum of 13 shifts per month — day shifts are 10 hours (8:00am–6:00pm) and night shifts are 14 hours (6:00pm–8:00am).
Core generalist specialty support resources are in place. A dedicated portable ultrasound is based in the ER and 24-hour emergent CT scanning is available on site. The hospital has 70 acute care beds with a 6-bed ICU. Specialty services include Anesthesia, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Family Medicine (Hospitalist), and 24-hour Emergency coverage. Further supportive services include 24-hour diagnostic imaging and laboratory services, physiotherapy, respiratory therapy, chemotherapy, pharmacy, dialysis, ICU/Cardiac, and palliative care. Visiting services for ophthalmology and urology are also available.

Carbonear is a beautiful rural town approximately 100 kilometres outside of St. John's, serving around 50,000 people in the Rural Avalon Region. QUALIFICATIONS
- Medical Degree (MD) from a recognized institution
- Current certification in ACLS, BLS, PALS, and ATLS
- Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador (www.cpsnl.ca)
- Must satisfy credentialing and privilege requirements of NL Health Services including a satisfactory criminal record check and vulnerable sector check
- Satisfactory Certificate of Conduct from the RCMP or local police authority

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide comprehensive emergency medicine care to patients of all age groups
- Work solo ER shifts with Nurse Practitioner support during weekday daytime hours
- Perform and interpret point-of-care ultrasound as required
- Collaborate with core specialty and support services available on site
- Participate in equitable and predictable shift scheduling
- Support person- and family-centered care; promote patient and worker safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks, and implementing improvements

REMUNERATION
Remuneration is in accordance with the Medical Care Plan (MCP) guidelines for Category A Emergency Departments.
Annual Retention Bonus (in accordance with current MOA):
- CAD 5,000 after 12 eligible months
- CAD 10,000 after 24 eligible months
- CAD 15,000 after 36 eligible months
Relocation Support: NL Health Services is prepared to provide assistance to offset relocation expenses, contingent on a 24-month return-in-service agreement. Relocation expenses will be approved in accordance with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador Relocation Policy:
