The academic division has close ties to the University of Alberta Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute (NMHI), a discovery and translational research collaborative.

The educational program in Neurology spans all levels of medical education from first year medical student through comprehensive fellowship programs. The Division has a highly-ranked, active residency training program, accepting 5-6 residents/year.  In the delivery of clinical care and education, the Division is ably supported by a large, committed, and collaborative group of community-based neurologists. Stroke has an active, successful fellowship program with 7 fellows, while other subspecialties also have fellowship programs, resulting in a rich training environment.

The Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) is one of Western Canada’s busiest tertiary care hospitals, serving northern Alberta and Western Canada. It provides acute care, a 24/7 emergency department, and specialized services, including the Lois Hole Hospital for Women and the CK Hui Heart Centre. It specializes in care for many under-represented populations in Edmonton. There is a very active and vibrant internal medicine program with all subspecialty representation. The RAH is an active teaching and learning site for medical students and residents from the University of Alberta and carries out essential research in many clinical programs to improve care for Albertans. The stroke program at RAH has 15 ward beds for strokes, covering inpatient acute stroke and stroke walk-ins to emergency. We are in the midst of planning expansion of the acute stroke program at RAH as a primary stroke centre and pivotal hospital site in the Edmonton corridor for acute stroke, especially as the acute intervention window is expands to 24 hours. The successful candidate will have an MD degree, or equivalent.  They will be eligible to be certified in Neurology with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada.  As well, they will be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).

Key accountabilities of the neurologist will include but will not be limited to participation and contribution to the treatment and care of People with TIA and stroke – acute inpatient and telestroke in the Edmonton corridor, at RAH, in addition to caring for those in the North zone and Northwest Territories. The stroke neurologist will assess patients for acute stroke, remotely and in emergency/hospital at RAH, differentiating acute stroke from stroke mimics such as seizures and migraine. The stroke neurologist will participate in stroke trial recruitment for local and multi-centre research studies and clinical trials. The neurologist will teach learners at all levels about neurology, stroke and TIA as well as stroke mimics, teaching at the bedside, inpatient, emergency and outpatient.  There are expectations around participation in inpatient stroke/neurology services and stroke/neurology call services on a rotating roster at RAH contributing to the Edmonton Corridor.

The successful applicant will be expected to apply for a Clinical Academic Colleague Appointment in the Department of Medicine, University of Alberta, which will be considered under a separate process through the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.

Interested candidates are asked to submit online a letter of intent and curriculum vitae outlining their experience, education, qualifications, fellowship training, experience and/or research experience, along with three letters of reference to:
