Job Description

The Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, within the Department of Surgery, at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is inviting applications for a permanent full-time faculty position for a pediatric Cardiovascular Surgeon. The Division of Cardiovascular Surgery is internationally recognized for its contributions to advancing clinical care, research, and innovation in the field of congenital heart surgery. The Division operates as a component of the Labatt Family Heart Centre, which includes Cardiology, Cardiovascular Surgery, Cardiac Critical Care, Cardiac Anesthesia, and Cardiovascular Research. The effective date of the appointment is flexible aiming for August 2026.

Additional Description

The candidate should have expertise in congenital heart surgery and should be an academic cardiovascular surgeon with a strong research interest. The successful candidate should possess strong leadership and communication skills. Evidence of excellence in teaching and research is required. We are seeking a candidate from varying levels of clinical and research experience.

Job duties include full-time clinical service, including operative procedure and perioperative patient care, research, and education.

The successful candidate will be an academic cardiovascular surgeon with a strong background in pediatric and congenital heart surgery, heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support, and adult congenital heart disease, and is expected to complement the Division’s clinical, education and research productivity. A candidate with specific interests in adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) and its surgery and minimally invasive congenital heart surgery will be prioritized.

Depending on qualifications, the successful candidate will be eligible for an appointment as a Surgeon-Scientist, or Surgeon-Investigator at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. Required qualifications include residency and/or fellowship training in cardiovascular surgery and pediatric and ACHD heart surgery. The candidate must qualify for certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or hold an equivalent international certification, and for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Candidates must obtain an appropriate Visa, if applicable.

The Division is comprised of five academic Pediatric Surgeons. Clinical activity is supported by congenital surgical fellows and cardiac surgical residents on rotation. The successful candidate can anticipate protected time to pursue academic goals. Applicants must have excellent clinical and surgical skills for the full spectrum of congenital heart diseases that present to SickKids. Applicants must also be committed to being fully participating members of high functioning interdisciplinary teams.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to leverage multidisciplinary, clinical, and basic science facilities that are available on the Hospital campus, including the 21-story Research Institute, and the University of Toronto’s Department of Surgery.

Candidates must be able to function proficiently in English and hold an M.D. or equivalent degree.

Remuneration will be competitive with other academic pediatric cardiovascular positions in Canada, with a salary range of $700,000-$775,000 CAD per year for 35 hours per week plus on call responsibilities to which will be added an equal distribution of billing overages. Support for relocation expenses will be offered.

Our Commitment to Diversity

The children and families we care for are diverse, and so are our employees. All are welcome to join our unique organizational culture and be part of our inclusive team.

The University of Toronto and SickKids are strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from racialized persons, persons of colour, women, Indigenous/Aboriginal People of North America, persons with disability, LGBTQ persons, and others who may contribute to further diversification of ideas.

SickKids, located at 555 University Avenue in downtown Toronto, is among the largest children’s hospitals in North America and has a long history of excellence in clinical care, research, and education. SickKids is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and is located adjacent to the University campus and to numerous specialty hospitals and biomedical research institutes. It is an exciting time at SickKids as we execute our campus redevelopment project, including a new state-of-the-art acute care hospital tower.

Toronto is a vibrant and multicultural city, having been named the 2nd most diverse city in the world by the UN, with over 51% of its residents born outside of Canada and home to over 230 ethnic groups, which is reflected in the city’s neighbourhood food scene along with its fifteen Michelin-starred restaurants and talents in key sectors like life science, finance, information, and communications technology. It is currently the fourth largest city in North America and boasts a safe, livable, downtown area with excellent housing, schools, and university access. It is consistently ranked as a top travel spot and internationally ranked as one of the world’s most livable cities. World famous lake and wilderness country and year-round outdoor recreation are easily accessible, as are two hub airports for regional or international travel.
