Hospitalist (Family Physicians or Internists)  

Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

We are in immediate need of coverage for our Hospitalist Program.   We are seeking both Family Physicians and Internists with interest and experience in inpatient medical care.

Sault Ste. Marie is located on the St. Mary’s River between Lake Huron and Lake Superior on the U.S. /Canadian border. The Sault has all the amenities of a regional urban centre, with both the Canadian wilderness and extraordinary vacation areas in Michigan just minutes away.  There is a strong cultural and arts basis in the community, and both winter and summer outdoor activities abound. The Sault has an excellent school system and offers a multitude of sports and artistic opportunities for children and adults alike.  Sault Ste. Marie is served by three Canadian airlines as well as one major U.S. airline.

Sault Area Hospital (SAH) is a new state-of-the-art facility recently opened in 2011. With approval for 291 inpatient beds and 14 Intensivist led ICU beds, SAH provides emergency, primary, secondary, selected tertiary and long-term care healthcare services to the city and the District of Algoma with a catchment population of approximately 115,000.  Programs include the Algoma District Cancer Program and a Regional Renal Program.

The internal medicine program is represented by specialists in general and interventional cardiology, critical care, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general internal medicine, geriatrics, hematology, infectious diseases, medical oncology, nephrology, respirology and rheumatology.  Additionally, there is diagnostic imaging supporting the state-of-the-art 1.5 Tesla MRI and two CT Scanners with access to interventional DI.  The hospital supports a full-time pulmonary function lab, endoscopy unit, non-interventional and interventional cath lab, nuclear medicine and ultrasonography.

The Hospitalist practice would include:

• a rotational model of care providing 14 days of service with 14 days off
• Responsibility for approximately 15-18 acute-equivalent patients a day
• Coverage of the broader hospitalist population of patients while on overnight or weekend call

Funding for Hospitalists is a combination of 100% fee for service plus a very competitive daily stipend and on call stipend. 

Affiliation with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) provides the opportunity to teach residents and medical students.
