Job Description

Position Overview

The Department of Surgery at The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) is seeking qualified and motivated Hospitalists to join our multidisciplinary inpatient care teams at both the General and Civic Campuses. This role offers an exciting opportunity to provide comprehensive inpatient medical care for hospitalized patients across several surgical specialty services within one of Canada's leading academic health sciences centres.

Hospitalists play an important role in supporting high-quality, patient-centred care by working collaboratively with surgeons, residents, nursing staff, and allied health professionals. The position focuses on inpatient management, care coordination, discharge planning, and enhancing continuity of care throughout the patient's hospital stay.

Physicians with a strong interest in hospital-based medicine are encouraged to apply. Previous experience in surgical specialties is not required.

The Divisions currently recruiting include:

• Thoracic Surgery

• Vascular Surgery

• General Surgery (including Acute Care Surgery and Trauma)

• Gynecologic Oncology

• Additional specialty opportunities anticipated

Key Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive inpatient medical care for patients admitted to surgical services

• Perform daily inpatient rounds and coordinate investigations, consultations, and discharge planning

• Collaborate closely with attending surgeons, residents, fellows, nursing staff, and allied health professionals

• Support patient flow, continuity of care, and quality improvement initiatives

• Participate in patient safety activities and development of clinical care pathways

• Contribute to the academic mission of the Department through teaching and mentorship opportunities, where applicable

• Optional opportunities for additional clinical activities, including surgical assisting, may be available depending on divisional needs and physician interest

• On-call responsibilities may be available in selected specialties

Training, Mentorship & Onboarding

The Department of Surgery is committed to ensuring a successful transition into this role.

Physicians with no previous surgical experience are encouraged to apply.

Successful candidates will receive:

• Structured onboarding and orientation

• Ongoing mentorship and support from an experienced Lead Hospitalist

• Guidance from surgical teams and physician leaders during integration into practice

• Opportunities for ongoing professional development and skill enhancement

Our goal is to create a supportive environment that enables physicians to develop confidence and thrive within a collaborative surgical care model.

Qualifications and Professional Requirements

  • Independent licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)
  • Medical Liability Coverage (CMPA)

  • Interest in inpatient surgical care and perioperative management; previous experience in that specialty is not required and pathology specific training and resources will be part of onboarding process
  • Ability to function effectively in a collaborative, high-acuity academic environment
  • Strong communication, organizational, and clinical decision-making skills
  • Previous experience in surgical specialties is not required.

Academic & Professional Environment

The Ottawa Hospital is one of Canada’s leading academic health sciences centres and a major teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Ottawa. The Department of Surgery offers a collegial academic environment with opportunities for education, leadership, and involvement in quality improvement and innovation initiatives.

• Full-time and part-time opportunities available

• Weekday/ daytime schedule

• Flexible scheduling options may be available depending on divisional needs

• Competitive compensation for full-time physicians is anticipated to be approximately $300,000 annually, depending on service assignment and clinical activity. Part-time remuneration is based on the number of weeks of coverage provided per year.

• Access to continuing professional development, teaching, and leadership opportunities

• Opportunity to become part of a supportive and collaborative surgical community

Why Join Us?

• Predictable daytime practice that supports work-life balance

• Flexible full-time and part-time opportunities
