Job Description
St. Joseph's General Hospital in Elliot Lake is seeking a qualified Locum Anaesthesiologist (FPA/FRCP) to provide respite coverage and support as needed throughout the year.
This role is critical to maintaining continuity of care, ensuring timely access to high-quality surgical services, and supporting the clinical team during periods of staffing transition or increased demand. This position offers the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a regional healthcare system while working in a supportive, collaborative setting that values professional excellence and work-life balance.
Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive anaesthesiology care including pre-operative assessment, intra-operative management, and post-operative follow-up.
- Manges support of surgical cases, including sedation, block, and general anesthesia for full range of general surgical/obstetrical/gynecology/ENT and ophthalmology procedures in accordance with clinical guidelines and hospital protocols.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including; general surgery, nursing, and specialty consultants, to ensure coordinated patient care.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in electronic health records (EHR) in compliance with hospital and regulatory standards (Meditech Expanse).
- Participate in on-call rotations as required, ensuring 24/7 anaesthesia coverage for emergencies and acute surgical cases.
- Support patient education and shared decision-making, promoting informed consent and post-operative recovery plans.
- Adhere to all hospital policies, infection control standards, and professional conduct expectations.
- Facilitate smooth handover and transition of care when departing the role.
Requirements:
- Active FRCSC certification in Anaesthesiology OR Certified Added Competence (CAC) CCFP (anaesthesia) with valid licensure to practice in the province of Ontario.
- Valid membership in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) and current malpractice insurance coverage.
- Experience in rural or regional healthcare settings is highly valued.
- Strong clinical judgment, interpersonal communication, and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to participate in on-call duties and flexible scheduling as needed.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative healthcare team in a community hospital setting.
