Job Description

This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

Remuneration for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and is based on the income scale of the six-step Academic Medicine and Health Services Program (AMHSP).

The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenure-track appointment with the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, dependent on qualifications, which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement and offers a comprehensive benefits package. 

Location - This role is in-person work at North Campus Edmonton in association with the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, in partnership with Alberta Health Services (AHS), invites applications for an academic position within the Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta. This position is a part of the Alberta Academic Medicine and Health Services Program (AMHSP). 

This full-time (1.0 FTE), tenure-track (contingent) position comprises approximately 50% time for clinical service and 50% time for academic pursuits, divided between research, teaching, and administrative duties (negotiable). The position would include after-hours on-call coverage shared amongst AMHSP division members.

Responsibilities

●      Clinical: Provide excellent patient care for patients presenting to the Stollery Children’s Hospital for gastroenterological care with a primary focus on liver diseases and liver transplantation.  Demonstrate ongoing personal medical education to ensure care is provided according to the most up-to-date evidence and guidelines.

●      Education and Mentorship: Teach and mentor learners at all levels in clinical and academic settings.

●      Research Contribution: Advance the division’s research portfolio in liver diseases, including facilitating funding opportunities, promoting academic productivity, and supporting faculty in achieving high-impact publications. Successfully compete for research funding and maintain an active, independent research program that contributes to the division’s academic strength.

●      Build partnerships within the university, healthcare system, and broader gastroenterology community to strengthen the division’s academic and clinical impact.

Qualifications

Interested applicants must have:

●      MD degree (or equivalent)

●      Completed residency training in Pediatrics and subspecialty training in Pediatric Gastroenterology with additional specialization in hepatology and liver transplantation. Ability to cover the liver and transplant service is essential.

●      Certified or eligible to become a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent

●      Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).

The successful applicant will join 9 highly collegial, academic pediatric gastroenterology physicians as well as a dedicated group of multidisciplinary allied health. We are the Western Canadian referral center for liver and intestinal and multivisceral transplantation (including the only Canadian center performing pediatric pancreatic islet cell transplantation) and provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient medical and transplant related care in a tertiary/quaternary setting, to a diverse population spread over an enormous geographical catchment area. We have numerous specialized outpatient clinics focusing on areas such as Eosinophilic Esophagitis, Celiac Disease, Aerodigestive Disorders and Disorders of Gut Brain Interaction (including a novel Chronic Abdominal Pain Clinic which is co-run with a Child Psychiatrist).  In addition to high quality clinical care, the division is active in teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and has a fully accredited Pediatric Gastroenterology subspecialty-training program through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The division also has an active clinical science research program, collaborating locally, nationally, and internationally. Locally, we work closely with the Women’s and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI) and have close ties to the adult GI and liver research groups at the University of Alberta Hospital. Opportunities for teaching in other academic programs and engagement in clinical quality improvement initiatives are also available.

The Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI) supports researchers within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and Alberta Health Services. With a focus on advancing women’s, children’s, and perinatal health, WCHRI provides extensive resources for faculty conducting research in these areas.

As a member of WCHRI, the successful candidate will have access to funding opportunities, biostatistical expertise, qualitative design support, knowledge translation resources, and clinical trials services. WCHRI also invests in research development by supporting trainees through scholarships, fellowships, and travel grants for presenting research outcomes.
