Job Description

GRANDE PRAIRIE & GRANDE PRAIRIE REGIONAL HOSPITAL is seeking a General Surgeon who is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) or FRCSC eligible with experience in community general surgery, encompassing a wide variety of elective, urgent, and emergent surgical pathologies. 

Experience in laparoscopic surgery is essential.

Willing to travel on a regular basis to outlying communities to provide surgical services to ongoing programs of the department.

The Surgeon will have Alberta Health Services hospital privileges.  The position will include hospital call.

Duties include, but may not be limited to:
• Reside in and have as his/her primary residence, Grande Prairie
•Establish and maintain a full-time practice within the community
•Provide hospital and call assistance as per call schedule, including full time participation in the general surgery on-call schedule for the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital
• Provide surgical consultative services (beyond primary community of practice) either in-person or utilizing Tele-Medicine or another form of telecommunication
• Contribute to and participate in teaching programs and activities.
• Contribute to and participate in other administrative duties as assigned.

The successful candidate may choose to operate their business by joining an existing practice or by opening their own practice. This is the candidate's business choice and will not be managed through the recruitment process.

GRANDE PRAIRIE is located 450 km NW of Edmonton; about the same distance from Jasper National Park; offering the best of both worlds - big city amenities without losing the comfort of a small, safe community with close proximity to outstanding wilderness areas.

The City of Grande Prairie is an economically strong, culturally diverse large urban centre, with a population of about 76,000 and growing.  There is a wide choice of recreation, education, shopping & entertainment opportunities. Grande Prairie is a full-service urban centre with a new Multiplex Recreational centre Eastlink Centre , community college Northwestern Polytechnic - Grande Prairie Regional College , numerous cultural events, alpine skiing Nitehawk Ski Hill , cross country skiing Nordic Ski mountain biking, camping, water sports, to name a few.

Public, separate, elementary and high schools, private schools, a French Immersion school and a regional degree granting college offer families a range of educational opportunities usually only available in major city centers. Enjoy winding park trails along the Bear Creek valley, taking walkers, joggers, bikers and roller blader's through 15 km of well treed and maintained park lands.  An Olympic-sized swimming pool, permanent indoor soccer arena, gymnastics centre, climbing wall facility and community fitness centers, indoor hockey arenas -including a brand-new twin ice arena - offer children and adults a full choice of sports and recreational activities.  The Prairie Art Gallery, Centre for Creative Arts, Second Street Theatre, a Live Theatre group and a college theatre all run drama and arts programs & productions for all ages. In addition to being a northern service centre for agriculture, forestry and petroleum industries; Grande Prairie is also a major retail shopping centre for a surrounding population of close to 250,000 people.

The Grande Prairie Regional Hospital is a new "State-of-the-Art" 194 bed acute care facility with a busy emergency department, ICU, NICU and specialty services in OB/Gyn, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, ophthalmology, ENT, urology, palliative care, pediatrics, and psychiatry; hosting over 10,000 discharges; including radiation therapy services, further increasing the capacity to provide services to the people of Northwestern Alberta and Northeastern British Columbia - Virtual Tour - Grande Prairie Regional Hospital
