Job Summary:
Join Recovery Alberta to deliver on its promise of accessible, sustainable addiction, mental health, and correctional health services as Senior Medical Director, Forensic Psychiatry & Correctional Health Services. Combining clinical experience and a proven track record in healthcare administration at a senior leadership level, the Senior Medical Director (SMD), Forensic Psychiatry & Correctional Health Services is responsible for the effective and efficient provision of integrated recovery-oriented psychiatry and mental health services in Recovery Alberta’s forensic facilities and programs across the province, as well as psychiatry and mental health services, dentistry, and primary care in provincial correctional facilities province-wide. This position ensures services are effectively aligned with the strategic direction of Recovery Alberta, and the policy direction of the Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction, including the Alberta Recovery Model.
Collaborating with other Senior Medical and Operational Leaders this is your opportunity to make a difference by guiding Recovery Alberta’s approach to psychiatry and mental healthcare that helps Albertans to overcome their challenges and live full, healthy lives.
This 0.4-0.5FTE position is provincial so the physical work location is negotiable within Alberta.
Responsibilities / Accountabilities:
The SMD is responsible and accountable to provide strategic and operational leadership for Forensic and Correctional Health services and program delivery across the province. This includes:
• Develop and maintain a strategic framework for Forensic and Correctional Health services and programs that supports operational goals in alignment with patient and family focused centred care and the Alberta Recovery Oriented System of Care Model.
• Develop and maintain a provincial framework for Forensic and Correctional Health services and program delivery.
• Lead physician workforce planning, recruitment/retention, and ensure appropriate clinical coverage for Forensic and Correctional Health programs and services.
• Sustainably manage financial, physical, and human resources.
• Collaborate, engage, and consult with internal and external stakeholders regarding Forensic and Correctional Health programs and services.
• Develop, implement, and evaluate programs and services, standards of practice, and best practices with a view to continuous improvement.
Qualifications and Required Attributes:
The successful applicants must hold an MD or its equivalency and shall have or be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, College of Family Physicians of Canada, or an equivalent professional body; obtain and maintain a Medical Staff Appointment; and have at least 5 years’ experience leading clinical services, with 3 years in senior leadership roles in diverse clinical settings.
In addition, preferred qualifications include:
• Proven ability to develop and execute long-term organizational strategies and initiatives, with a focus on achieving measurable goals.
• Experience in leading change management and driving innovation to improve service delivery and outcomes.
• Demonstrated success in developing medical leaders and leading quality improvement initiatives to address complex healthcare challenges.
• Strong interpersonal and public relations skills, with a track record of influencing, negotiating, and managing relationships to achieve organizational goals.
• Credentialled as a Canadian Certified Physician Executive (CCPE).
• Experience in provision of treatment of addiction, mental health, and/or correctional health services.

Reporting Relationship:
The practitioner will report to the Chief Medical Officer.
