Job Description

Atikokan General Hospital and Atikokan Medical Clinic are searching for rural generalists to provide ER and Clinic coverage for intermittent locum bookings

*** LUCRATIVE, WELL-SUPPORTED, LOW-VOLUME ER AND CLINIC ***

Atikokan is a quaint community in Northwestern Ontario with a population of 2800 people. A two hour drive west of Thunder Bay on the TransCanada Highway, Atikokan is the gateway to Quetico Provincial Park, a wonderland of pristine lakes and hiking trails for camping, fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Whether in the summer or winter, Atikokan and the surrounding community is an outdoor enthusiast’s playground!

Atikokan General Hospital is a fully accredited hospital with 15 acute beds and 26 long-term-care beds. It offers a variety of services including lab, x-ray, ultrasound, occupational and physiotherapy, and community counseling (with a mental health counselor on call 24/7). The Emergency Department receives video ICU support from Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) Regional Critical Care Response (RCCR) program, has access to an ultrasound scanner for POCUS, and has its own helipad for Critical Care transfers through ORNGE. Atikokan Medical Clinic consists of 7 doctors and 5 support staff who provide same-day and scheduled clinic appointments from Monday to Friday. At least one member of the local physician group is available 24/7 to support locums in the ER or clinic as required. Our hospital is also part of the Emergency Peer-to-peer program with virtual support from an experienced ER physician 24/7 coordinated through Criti-call.

Locum physicians provide support to our physician group by providing primary care appointments, and 24-hour ER coverage.

Clinic work is paid at the HFO Rate, while ER On Call shifts are renumerated a competetive hourly rate for weekdays after 5 pm and 24 hrs weekends and holidays. All clinic and hospital work are subject to OHIP shadow-billing payments, which are remitted to the locum. Flights, car rentals, gas, and housing are all paid for under the HFO Rural Family Medicine Locum Program (RFMLP). For physicians offering ER coverage, ACLS and ATLS certification and recertification will also be reimbursed through HFO if completed within 6 months of your locum.

Come locum or work in a place where a collegial work environment and work-life balance rules supreme! Email ***@aghospital.on.ca (🔒 Premium) with any questions you may have, to let us know when you are available to come experience what Atikokan has to offer, or to be added to our locum email list for future consideration.
