The Department of Medicine and the Division of Hematology at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital is looking for a hematologist to join in our expansion within the Malignant Hematology program as a full-time academic faculty member.

The 23+ faculty members in the Malignant Hematology, Transplant and Cellular Therapy programs work within well-defined and integrated clinical and research groups, with a variety of academic pursuits. The Myeloma Program, with its 4 full time faculty members, provides specialized care to patients with multiple myeloma, amyloidosis, and related hematologic conditions. We are a well-defined and successful clinical and research group, with a robust and expanding clinical practice.

The position is within the province of Ontario AFP for malignant hematologists (POAFP) and remuneration is competitive nationally.

The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually. Ground-breaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 25 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will hold four weekly outpatient clinics for patients with plasma cell disorders, participate as an attending physician on the inpatient malignant hematology service, and share on-call responsibilities within the malignant hematology program. In addition, they will conduct clinical research and/or quality improvement initiatives, contribute to teaching activities at the University of Ottawa, and participate in regular program and divisional meetings.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have expertise in myeloma with an academic path in education, research, or administration. There is great potential for collaboration in any of these areas.

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have, or be eligible for certification in Hematology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario. The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of an Assistant Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.
