Job Description

Position Description:

The Clinical Assistant(s) in this proposed program will work in coordination with the physicians from the Department of Cardiac Sciences at the New Brunswick Heart Centre to provide hospital based clinical services for the Divisions of Interventional Cardiology, Electrophysiology, Clinical Cardiology, and cardiac surgery. The Clinical Assistant(s) will also provide in-house on-call CICU and CV-ICU coverage in conjunction with the attending physician. This document applies to each individual Clinical Assistant working under the Program.

Job Duties:

1) Provide History and Physical Examination of inpatients or outpatients referred to the NBHC in conjunction with the attending physician;

2) Provide daily rounds and clinical care for patients admitted to the NBHC in conjunction with the attending physician;

3) Participate in an on-call rotation during statutory holidays, weekends, and evenings that provides care for NBHC inpatients (“first call” for NBHC inpatient units);

4) Participate in the evaluation, and treatment, of emergency room patients in conjunction with, and at the discretion of, the consulting/attending physician;

5) Participate in the management of urgent and emergent cardiac conditions and complications related to cardiac procedures performed at the NBHC in conjunction with the attending physician;

6) Participate and play a role in helping to organize patient flow at the NBHC which

includes triage office and creation of the weekly procedural slate in collaboration with the attending physician;

7) Participate as an active member of the Code Blue Team with ACLS certification;

8) Regular attendance at weekly Cardiovascular rounds and attendance and participation in TAVI/structural rounds when appropriate;

9) Practice in a collaborative fashion as a member of an interdisciplinary team and consult with members of other health professions as appropriate; this could also include acting as a clinical mentor to newer members of the multidisciplinary team.

10) Negotiate planned absences in advance to ensure coverage of services is maintained;

11) Participate in a medical practice that is compatible with Horizon Health Networks mission, values, and strategic direction, and within the confines of the rules and bylaws

of the Department of Cardiac Sciences and medical staff;

12) Within the confines of the scope of practice and position description provided, other duties that may arise by circumstance and may be assigned by their Clinical Supervisor, the Head of the Department of Cardiac Sciences, the Local Chief of Staff, or local Medical Director.

Qualifications:

Eligibility Criteria

To be hired in a Clinical Assistant position, a physician must hold eligibility letter for a Clinical Assistant license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick. To be eligible for a Clinical Assistant license, a physician must:

1) Have a medical degree from a medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and which is acceptable in Canada,

2) Be legally entitled to live and work in New Brunswick,

3) Meet English or French language proficiency requirements as set out in in CPSNB’s Language Proficiency Policy,

4) Have acquired two years postgraduate training and one-year licensed independent, unsupervised practice experience or have acquired one year post graduate training and two years licensed independent, unsupervised practice experience,

5) Have LMCC or acceptable alternative as set out in CPSNB’s Acceptable Alternatives to LMCC policy,

6) Must be current in clinical practice for at least 450 hours within five (5) years preceding candidate application,

7) ACLS certification or equivalent,

8) Provide evidence of good character and evidence of fitness to practice, including

professional and ethical behavior, which may include

  • through self-disclosure;
  • certificates of professional conduct from each jurisdiction in which they held license,
  • letters of reference;
  • or other information as requested by the College.

Clinical Assistants will be required to:

1) Maintain appropriate annual CME/CPD requirements;

2) Comply with the policies and procedures of the Department of Cardiac Sciences;

3) Comply with the provisions of the Hospital Act, the Regional Health Authorities Act, Community Health Center regulation, Medical Services Payment Act, and their regulations;

4) Follow the code of ethics of College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick and the Canadian Medical Association;

5) Comply with recommendations of a performance review after 12 weeks, 6 months, and one year after employment and annually thereafter;

6) Be a member in good standing with the New Brunswick Medical Society; and

7) Maintain malpractice insurance from the Canadian Medical Protective Association appropriate to the category of practice.

Supervision of Clinical Assistants

Each Clinical Assistant must be supervised directly or indirectly by a clinical supervisor who is the most responsible physician. The clinical supervisor will be the Head of the Division (or their

delegate) in which the Clinical Assistant is working.

About the Facility:

Horizon’s Saint John Regional Hospital is the largest tertiary care hospital in New Brunswick and is the primary health care referral centre for this area and to all New Brunswickers for major trauma and cardiac care.

The New Brunswick Trauma Program, New Brunswick Heart Centre, and the New Brunswick Stem Cell Transplant Centre are located within the hospital, as are Radiation Oncology and Nephrology services. This site offers autologous stem cell therapy and a stem cell processing laboratory.

The Saint John Regional Hospital also serves as the centre for Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick’s distributed medical education program. The hospital services a catchment population of 170,000 people.
