About the Facility:

The Restigouche Hospital Centre (RHC) in Campbellton provides specialized mental health services in both official languages to all residents of New Brunswick.

This 140-bed hospital provides:

  • Specialized medium- and long-term psychiatric rehabilitation services;
  • Consultation and stabilization for those suffering from complex psychiatric problems or other related illnesses;
  • Forensic psychiatry (assessment of fitness to stand trial and criminal responsibility);
  • Care for those who have been found not criminally responsible because of mental disorders or who are not fit to stand trial.
  • The objective of the RHC is overall recovery, personal development, a return to independence, and reintegration into society for patients.

Interdisciplinary services and programs are important elements in rehabilitation. They are adapted to the needs of each patient to make them effective. Continuity of care requires collaboration with caregivers, community mental health centres, and addiction services to provide patients with the support they need.

The Mental Health Commission of Canada has recognized the RHC for its new model of recovery-based care. It is working in partnership with Dr. David Stayner of the community health and recovery program at Yale University in Connecticut.

About the Community:

Campbellton is beautifully situated amid one of the world’s oldest mountain ranges, the Appalachians, and located on the shores of the Restigouche River, known worldwide for salmon fishing. The earliest settlements to the area contained Scottish, English, French, Irish and Micmac cultural groups. These vibrant people remain to this day a unique mosaic of the Canadian identity in and around the City. Campbellton is recognized for its quality of life, educational opportunities and social and cultural diversity. The city rates highly with its sports facilities and the outdoor wonder of its parks and playgrounds. Improved hiking trails and recreation developments are benefits for residents' health and the environment. To learn more about Campbellton, visit the City’s website at www.campbellton.org.
